Feneril (Slumbara): it doesn't take much discouragement with this group
Feneril (Slumbara): BTW I can't talk on discord, the baby is asleep and her crib is right on the other side of the wall from my PC
Feneril (Slumbara): She wakes up really easily for the first half hour or so that she is asleep, so for a little while I can't make much noise
Kazemi (Volmalric): A good reason not to talk
When last we left our intrepid "heroes" they had managed to use conflicting Story Declarations to create an potential bloodletting between what should have been a helpful group of soldiers from the Aquilonian outpost of Fort Velitrium.
Sergeant: Do you all surrender and submit to trial at Fort Velitrium, or do we have to deal with you like the psychotic bandits you appear to be?
Sensible Rescued Villager snores.
Other Rescued Villagers run in panic screaming while waving their hands in the air.
Other Rescued Villagers: Eeek! Egads! Doom is upon us!
Volmalric: Given that we're transporting refugees back to the city, we would be ecstatic to work alongside you, right guys?
Meltam Perandus: Trial? Justice? In MY Hyboria? Sir, prepare for a brawl!
Slumbara: Is Captain Estarcus there?
Slumbara: He owes Slumbara money
Sergeant: Except for the whole "killing one of my men"
Slumbara: So I would be happy to go
Sergeant: Yes, Captain Estarcus will be there.
Slumbara turns to Meltam
Slumbara: You will come with Slumbara to get paid
Slumbara's Animated Head: Yes, this is a great idea. Also, I enjoy eating the flesh of small children!
Slumbara: Or your arms will
Meltam Perandus: Persuade 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 22]
Slumbara: Discipline 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 20]
Feneril (Slumbara): No, Slumbara wounded him
Feneril (Slumbara): Meltam killed him
Feneril (Slumbara): With a failed healing roll
GM: Fen is 100% correct.
Meltam Perandus: ...Okay I submit to the authorities.
Volmalric: Good
Slumbara turns back to the villagers
Meltam Perandus: May cooler heads prevail and Bossonian pragmatism prevail on this day. Mitra guide us all.
Sensible Rescued Villager snores.
Slumbara: It is ok friends, these men aren't picts and Slumbara does not have to kill them
Other Rescued Villagers: Eeek! Oooh! Woohoo!
Volmalric gives Meltam a stern look, disapproving of his previous shenanigans
Slumbara: We will go with them to where you will all be safe
Slumbara takes out a stack of business cards
Slumbara: And tell all your friends about Slumbara
Volmalric takes one of the cards and inspects it
Slumbara's Animated Head: This is horrible! I thought this was guaranteed to end in excessive violence. You know Slumbara, with some mud and blood the people paying bounties can't tell the difference between Picts and Velitrium soldiers.
Slumbara's Animated Head: Just saying, those are some pretty wimpy people who are easily slain. And think how much easier it would be to take back just the heads of the villagers also!
Volmalric: Except for when their people can recognize the heads that you're bringing back. And no, they're not going to pay you for heads they can't recognize. Just in case that happens
Other Rescued Villagers: AAAHHH!!! PANIC! RUN FOR HILLS!
Volmalric: Also, is there anything we can do about these heads? Cut out their tongues or something?
Meltam Perandus: Sorcery 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 9]
Slumbara: You do not sound like a squirrel friend
Slumbara's Animated Head: Nuts! I need nuts for winter!
Slumbara: Hmm, just to be safe, you should be careful about talking around these white soldiers
Slumbara: I do not know if they appreciate peaceful woodland spirits as I do
Meltam Perandus appears to fully cooperate with the local authorities.
Volmalric: You appear to be misusing the word "peaceful". I think you meant "murderous"
At this point, a very large raven flies down, grabs the annoying talkative head from Slumbara's chest and rips it free of the chain. Then it flies over and lands (with dripping head first) on Meltam and begins pecking through the skull.
Volmalric: Slumbara, where did you get these cards?
Meltam Perandus: Ah, what a lovely creature, full of a strong sense of fair play. Surely it saw that Meltam, Hero of the Black River, was the one to claim this Pict brute.
Sergeant: Okay, that is just creepy, in an already weird ass day.
Meltam Perandus: Persuade 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 25]
Slumbara: From a merchant in Argos
Sergeant: But since you surrendered, let's be on our way.
Slumbara to the villagers
Slumbara: By "surrendered" he means peacefully agreed to go with him where we were already going
Slumbara: When you tell your friends about Slumbara, "Surrendered" is a bad word
Sergeant: Right, agreed to come along in a "not chained up" way.
The Raven smashes through the skull with its beaks and brains begin oozing and sliding down Meltam's face as the bird begins eating what looks like spaghetti dinner.
Volmalric: Which is really ideal. Thank you very much for the backup
Other Rescued Villagers vomit profusely.
Slumbara strikes at the annoying bird with his sword
Meltam Perandus: Excuse me Seargent Sir, could I quickly wash in the river?
Slumbara: Melee 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 31]
Volmalric: The river is tainted and evil
Volmalric: That's what made the heads talk
Volmalric: I think
Slumbara: I swam across it twice and nothing bad happened to me
Slumbara: But I am very mighty
Slumbara: a lesser man like you like drown
Volmalric: You're made of much sterner stuff than Meltam, and all your heads started talking after your swim
Volmalric: Also, Meltam disappeared below the waters for like 5 minutes
Volmalric: So I think he should stay away from the waters
Slumbara swings at the bird, but it is clearly intended to be a warning only. The Raven looks at Slumbara with a skeptical eye, then resumes eating.
Sergeant: We have boats down river, we can just ride those down to Fort Velitrium.
Sergeant: Assuming you have any skill with boats and won't fall in...
Volmalric: Also, I am Volmaric. These are my companions, Slumbara and Meltam, as well as assorted refugees from the north
Slumbara: We had a bad experience with boats before, Meltam nearly drowned and I had to save him
Sensible Rescued Villager wakes up and yawns.
Sensible Rescued Villager: Well, they are doomed.
Sergeant: I am Sergeant Edric, formerly of the Gunderland Guards.
Sergeant: It is nice to meet people who may or may not be guilty of murder and other nefarious deeds. But at least you are civilized about it.
Meltam Perandus: Society 4EXP/4FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 32]
Slumbara: Customer service is very important in this business
The Raven drops enough guano on Meltam that he actually looks taller now.
Meltam Perandus Mumbles something unintelligible.
Meltam Perandus: Okay, I'm really going to clean off before this ride...
Volmalric: No, no you don't
Slumbara takes out a disgusting, bloody flap of skin and holds it up to the raven
Slumbara: Fuck off bird
Slumbara: No one likes you
The Raven looks at the skin and makes a loud cawing noise, then stretches its wings wide and flies off.
Slumbara puts away the bloody flap of severed skin
Volmalric: Well, that's convenient
Meltam Perandus: I think you are raven mad about birds there, Friend Slumbara.
Meltam Perandus: It was only behaving as small woodland animals do.
The head has been bored through and stopped talking minutes ago. It is pretty much an unsalvagable pile of gristle and shattered bone, stuck to Meltam's head thanks to a mound of sticky droppings.
Volmalric: Shall we talk as we walk?
Slumbara: Small woodland animals are apparently pricks, that squirrel wanted to kill all the villagers
Feneril (Slumbara): I thought we were walking
Feneril (Slumbara): Toward the boats
Kazemi (Volmalric): I say we rule it that we are
Edric: Yes, we will be at the boats in about 15 minutes.
Edric gestures for everyone to walk faster.
Edric: There may be Picts in the area.
Edric dispatches his men to corral and organize the villagers.
Volmalric: There may be worse things than Picts out there, so we're glad to have your assistance
Volmalric: I'm keeping an eye on Meltam
Slumbara: Speak for yourself, Slumbara needs no man's assistance
Tack (Meltam Perandus): trouble moratorium. no actions.
Volmalric: Observation Successes = 2 [2d20 = 14]
Meltam Perandus: Awareness - 8 Successes = 0 [2d20 = 27]
Slumbara: Awareness - 8 Successes = 2 [2d20 = 8]
Slumbara: Observation 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 19]
The group does not spot any signs of Picts and the villagers are loaded into boats. Edric splits up his men so that every boat is crewed by enough of his soldiers to maintain control and take them downriver.
Edric: You three have to ride in one of the small canoes. I'd appreciate it if you didn't try to paddle off on your own, but I was thinking about this, and I'd rather save the villagers' skins than take you back to Velitrium and hang yours. If the need arises that is.
Meltam Perandus: Sailing Successes = 1 [2d20 = 18]
Edric gestures for a three man canoe off to the side of one of the flat bottom barges they have loaded the villagers into.
Slumbara: Sailing 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 33]
Meltam Perandus: No problem! We've got this!
Volmalric: Sailing 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 6]
Slumbara: It is ok, I will save Meltam if he drowns again
Meltam manages to get the boat in the water, and with Volmaric's help they manage to get it downriver alongside the barges and all the way to Velitrium.
Captain Estarcus: Hello and welcome back!
Edric: They killed one of my men sir.
Meltam Perandus: Survival Successes = 2 [2d20 = 10]
Volmalric points at Meltam
Slumbara: In my defense, he snuck up on me
Volmalric: They were both accidents, one counterambush and one attempt to treat the counterambush gone wrong
Captain Estarcus: Yes, but Baron Trebillius, prior to locking himself into the brothel abut a day ago, said they were innocent of all charges and it was a complete misunderstanding.
Volmalric gestures at Slumbara and Meltam respectively
Edric: I thought he was gay...
Captain Estarcus: So did I, after all the times he grabbed my ass.
Slumbara: They have boys in brothels
Captain Estarcus: No, he actually sent them all to his place and stayed in the brothel. Somewhat suspicious but it gets him out of my hair for a while.
Edric: What about my slain man?
Captain Estarcus: I will deduct from their reward suitable compensation for the bereaved family.
Edric: Works for me. Thanks Captain.
Captain Estarcus: You are free to go.
Captain Estarcus gestures for the soldiers to depart.
Edric and his men leave to resupply and handle other issues.
Meltam Perandus is mildly relieved to not be at odds with this particular town.
Captain Estarcus: Well, let's head into my office and you can tell me what happened. Given that you returned some villagers, but I do not see Hauk among you, I assume there was some suitably heroic battle and you vanquished horrible evils?
Captain Estarcus walks with the group back to his office in the garrison barracks. He gestures for everyone to sit down on the wooden chairs and pours you all some beer.
Meltam Perandus restrains any tales of valor to let Slumbara Extermination LLC make some impressive claims.
Volmalric follows him into the room
Slumbara: He was killed by a big stone man
Volmalric: Alas, one of those evils took Hauk from this world. Dark sorceries were involved up there, and not dark in the ways of the Picts
Captain Estarcus: Curious, was this the "white skinned man" Hauk mentioned?
Slumbara: No, this man was made of rocks
Slumbara: Not skin
Volmalric: Literally a demon
Volmalric: There was Acheronian magic involved up there
Captain Estarcus: Strange, I do not think Acheron was out this far, but it's height was millennia ago. Many things could have happened we know nothing of.
Meltam Perandus shows Estarcus the headdress.
Captain Estarcus: And a man made of rocks? Like some demon from the outer realms or something? Did you defeat it?
Volmalric: We did not, it vanished before we had the opportunity
Meltam Perandus: We looted this off the presumtive cult leader. We had no arms capable of stopping Rocky...so....yeah that.
Slumbara: I don't know what realm it came from
Slumbara: Meltam, what realm did it come from?
Captain Estarcus: That is definitely not of Pict manufacture. I am not sure what it is exactly. There is a historian and trinkets dealer named Oqotur, he is from a land far to the east and dabbles in such things.
Meltam Perandus: Then I shall keep it safe and prepare a report for you as soon as possible!
Captain Estarcus: He may be able to tell you more about it. And if this rock creature is running free, more information will be good.
Slumbara: He seemed friendly, apart from killing Hauk
Meltam Perandus: Surely a rock creature loosed on the Pict tribes is a net plus?
Volmalric: I'm pretty sure he openly stated something about starting another kingdom of blood and slavery
Meltam Perandus: better they rally around stopping it then us.
Volmalric: Short term gain if he stays up there, but long term it's a very bad thing
Slumbara: I have to go AFK for one sec
Captain Estarcus: Hmm...and what if they decide to worship the creature and unite to destroy us?
Captain Estarcus: No, I think we need a better idea what is going on here.
Volmalric: Agreed
Volmalric: Also, Slumbara brought heads
Volmalric: But the river on the way over appears to have animated them
Captain Estarcus: I will dispatch scouts to keep an eye on the Picts. If you want to spend a few days in town to recover and learn information, you are welcome to do so. Keep me posted on what you find.
Captain Estarcus: Ah yes, we should settle some accounts, you need spending money if you are going to be here.
Volmalric: That would be greatly appreciated
Meltam Perandus: That is probable, but I think we need some time to recompose ourselves before planning another venture.
Feneril (Slumbara): back
Slumbara: Slumbara does like money
Meltam Perandus: Linguistics Successes = 0 [2d20 = 24]
Meltam Perandus: Linguistics Successes = 0 [2d20 = 36]
Captain Estarcus: All right, I believe I owe you all 4 Gold for your services, plus however many heads Slumbara has. Which can be dumped in that barrel over there.
Slumbara deposits 11 of his 12 heads in the barrel, but hangs onto the head with the Bear spirit
Slumbara: I will keep this one, to strike fear into the hearts of my enemies
Captain Estarcus counts out the 11 heads, and gives Slumbara 2 more Gold.
Captain Estarcus: Whatever works for a mighty warrior such as yourself is fine with me.
GM: "Gold" in the sense above is not "X Gold pieces" but actually a handful of coins and a couple small gems, which come out to the abstracted value of "X Gold pieces" in game mechanics terms.
Meltam Perandus: I shall go and seek Oqotur. Thank thee much for an opportunity to secure civilization out here.
GM: Which - IMHO - I like way better than tracking all that crap individually.
Feneril (Slumbara): yes, I agree
RIGHT - CAROUSING RULES.
Feneril (Slumbara): In the Song of Ice and Fire ruleset I made and played a few years back, I just got rid of the concept of money altogether and gave every player a "wealth die" that represented their access to money
Feneril (Slumbara): It worked really well actually
Step 1) Pay "Upkeep" - this is the cost of your gear, replacing anything you lost, food and lodging, paying off debts, etc. Your Upkeep Cost is 3 + Standing - Renown.
Meltam Perandus: [2d6 = 6]
Volmalric: [2d6 = 7]
Feneril (Slumbara): my headset was muted lol
Feneril (Slumbara): I was wondering why nothing was happening
Meltam Perandus: Me moneybin!
Slumbara: [2d6 = 5]
Meltam Perandus: [1d6 = 3]
Volmalric: [2d6 = 9]
Slumbara gets drunk in the local tavern and regales the locals with the daring tale of how he cut off a Pict's arm and beat him to death with it in order to save the helpless villagers
Volmalric: [2d20 = 17]
Slumbara: [2d20 = 18]
Meltam Perandus: [2d20 = 27]
The villagers are in AWE of Slumbara.
Slumbara: Brawn - 10 Successes = 1 [2d20 = 22]
Slumbara wins the arm-wrestling competition, but manages to dislocate the shoulder of the visiting dignitary, who takes this as a personal affront and likely will seek revenge at some inopportune time.
Feneril (Slumbara): Meltam causes... There is a huge fire...
Campaign saved.
