The sequel to Knights of Pen and Paper has been out for a while. Recently they released a patch with new content and a DLC expansion pack. While I have read many complaints about the length of the game (a second half-length campaign has been added) and various other issues, I really like the mechanics of the new game. Sure, some of the abilities are more powerful than others, and it is possible to munchkin (min/max) through the game, but the same was true of the former.
It lacks some of the humor from the first one, but also has a better and more interesting story, at least to me. And the humor is funny, it is just not as prevalent and is more self-directed. In any case, give it a look and I am pretty sure that you will make your money back in time spent. Also, while it offers In-App-Purchases, they are completely unnecessary (unless you want to add the DLC) for completing the game. Which is the perfect type of DLC in my mind. Games that I enjoy so much I want to buy the IAP because I feel like supporting the company are universally better than pay-to-play games.
