Rhotinia climbs out of the portal and looks around for Asgrim
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.11+1d20.4 = 15]
You did succeed!
Rhotinia enters the normal Hyborian world and feels the warmth of the sun beating down on her. She hauls Democles out of the portal and then stops to look around and see what awaits her.
A number of Inquisitor soldiers are stationed nearby, while a familiar looking Inquistior Captain barks orders and arranges a defensive cordon. It seems the battle of Messantia is still in full swing, and somehow the small, unobtrusive graveyard you are in is quite important.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Get them under cover!
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes points at Rhotinia as several soldiers run over and hold up Tower shields to absorb a hail of darts that strike the ground around her.
Rhotinia: It seems things have not improved while we were in there
Volmalric waits for Tilpi to follow after and helps Bridgit through prior to going up himself.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.14+1d20.17 = 31]
You did not succeed.
Rhotinia: What is the situation here?
Tilpi appears dazed and confused. Does the body really need this blood stuff to work?
Looking out beyond the graveyard it appears that a veritable sea of ghouls and monstrous creatures are attacking the area, the wards defending it seem to be slowly dwindling from the constant onslaught.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Well, the situation is your man Asgrim found my soldiers and told us to hold here until you returned. And things are not going well, as whatever entity is controlling this undead horde has decided this graveyard and everyone in it needs to be removed from existence.
Rhotinia: Not surprising, he was in there with us until he ran away like a coward
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes arches an eyebrow.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Your man Asgrim is not a coward by any defintion I am familiar with, ma'am, but if you say so, I'm not here to quarrel. He left a while ago with the Lord Inquisitor and some other woman to go get something from inside the city. No idea how that is going.
Volmalric sticks his head out of the portal with Bridgit
Volmalric: Oh, this is more exciting than I was expecting
Volmalric: Does anybody know who's tomb this is, by chance?
Bridgit: I do.
Bridgit is her answer to Volmalric.
Tilpi: Doesn't anyone not evil understand magic here, or is it an exclusive club?
Tilpi: Why can't someone banish the ghouls?
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Ghouls are not a creature that can be banished, at least, that is what Argala told me when I asked him this at the Dyiary estate.
Volmalric: They're not creatures from another world, though they are tainted
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes looks at Volmalric.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Yes, that is what Argala said, so I guess it is the right thing.
Rhotinia: Well, don't keep us waiting child
Bridgit: This tomb belongs to no one. It is a gate that leads into a prison dimension created by Giant-King Sorcerers, who taught the secrets to Thurian sorcerors, and was later re-discovered and put into use by Acheronians.
Volmalric: Do we lose anything by destroying the tomb, then?
Bridgit: Access to the dimension and anything trapped within would not be able to exit from it.
Rhotinia: At this point, the only idea I have is to find someone who can read this damn book and find some way to bring Rhiveth back to help
Rhotinia: Either that or burn the entire city to the ground
There is another hail of arrows, darts, and stones pelting among you. Fighting is raging along the fence, as it seems the ghouls are able to pass some of the stronger wards.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Ah, that name! Yes. Asgrim and the High Inquisitor said they needed to get some things from the city to help with whatever this Rhiveth person could do. They said they would be back here as soon as they found what they needed.
Tilpi: This?
Tilpi Brandishes a book.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes shrugs.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Err... maybe?
Volmalric: Hmmmm
Volmalric: Do we need to go back in there?
Volmalric: Bridgit, do you know how long this portal lasts?
Bridgit: It is open now, it should be fine until sunset.
A couple soldiers grab Democles and lug him around the corner and out of the rain of arrows, as he seems incapable of moving himself and is a nice target for the ghoul archers. He also still seems mostly catatonic and does a lot of drooling.
Rhotinia begins firing back at the ghouls to help Captain Diogenes' men while the conversation continues
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Ranged test:
Target: 13 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.13+1d20.8 = 21]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia successfully shoots a pair of ghouls.
Volmalric: Let me see the book, Tilpi
Tilpi: It's yours.
Tilpi: Also here is your amulet of Mitra.
Tilpi: Also, I am sorry if they are in less than pristine conditions.
Rhotinia: Well if we can't get the book to Rhiveth's tomb, perhaps we can summon her in there
Rhotinia: If we can get Democlese breathing again
Rhotinia: Or if anyone else can read ancient Acheronian or whatever this book is written in
Bridgit: I can.
Rhotinia: I am going to swallow the urge to scream at you for not sharing that earlier. Tilpi, the book
Bridgit sounds brave, quite honestly looks pretty close to death, her skin is greyish in color and she has lost a lot of blood.
Tilpi points enthusasitically at Volmalric.
Tilpi: No more book here.
Rhotinia: On second though, we need to do something for Bridgit's condition before we worry about that
Volmalric flips through the book, looking into what he can to discern the meanings
Rhotinia continues firing volleys into the ghouls
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Ranged test:
Target: 13 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 4 Momentum: 3 [1d20.13+1d20.14+1d20.2+1d20.9 = 38]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia: Rhotinia does damage with Longbow (2 loads):
Rolling 7d6 combat dice...
Total: 7 Effects: 2 [1d60.1+2d60.2+2d60.3+2d60.6 = 23]
Rhotinia kills several more ghouls. At this rate, she will make a slight decrease in the ghoul population in another 45 rounds.
Volmalric used a Fortune point to add a Natural 1 to their dice pool
Volmalric: Volmalric rolls a Lore test:
Target: 12 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 5 Momentum: 4 [1d20.1+1d20.4 = 5]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric: What the heck?
Volmalric: This isn't even Acheronian
Tilpi: Is it a steamy romance novel?
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: I could totally go for one of those right now.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Excuse me, I'll be back shortly.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes runs off to the gate to rally defenders who are being pushed back by swarm of angry ghouls.
Bridgit: I need to sit down.
Bridgit is clutching her chest and wheezing.
Bridgit sinks to her buttocks.
Rhotinia offers Bridgit some water
Rhotinia: I am afraid I never learned to heal my dear, but I'll see if I can find you a medic
Rhotinia goes to the soldiers to find a medic for Bridgit
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Society test:
Target: 17 Focus: 5 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.11+1d20.4 = 15]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia locates a medic and brings them to Bridgit
Rhotinia: See what you can do for the girl. I'm... not sure about her physiology
Volmalric sits down in the shade of the mausoleum and a tower shield, flipping through the book. His eyes scan over the pages and he pulls out a notebook, writing notes down in the same script as is in the book
Tilpi: Still better to be a solider right here. How would you deal with dead crowd as an entertainer?
Tilpi bleeds and whistles
Medic: Umm... well, the blood is a bit oddly colored.
Medic looks at Bridgit.
Medic: Have you been poisoned?
Bridgit: No worse than normal. You?
Medic scribbles note, "Patient is in shock and has been poisoned."
Tilpi takes a hint from Rhotinia and fires wildly at the ghouls
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Ranged test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.19+1d20.4 = 23]
You did succeed!
Tilpi shoots a ghoul.
Medic watches Tilpi and Rhotinia.
Medic: I'm a little worried when the sun goes down and the nasty non-bleeding creatures come back out.
Medic offers Bridgit some spiced herbal tea.
Medic looks at chest wound.
Medic: Umm... that should be fatal. Like, really fatal. How are you alive?
Bridgit: Can any of us answer that question? What is the meaning of life?
Medic looks at Rhotinia.
Medic: I have to admit, I'm not quite sure what I'm dealing with here. Is she actually a ghoul or something?
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.17+1d20.20 = 37]
You did not succeed.
Tilpi: She's not a ghoul; do you treat all your patients like this?
Medic: Umm.. no ma'am, just the ones that I'm not entirely sure are human or how they are still alive.
Medic: For instance, I can tell you are barely standing but putting on a brave front right now, and the nasty gash in your abdomen would probably have felled much lesser people, but somehow you are upright. I would recommend plenty of rest in a non-combat situation.
Rhotinia: Well it was worth a shot
Rhotinia: Off you go, back to the other boys
Medic nods at Rhotinia.
Rhotinia shoos the medic away
Medic: Good luck ma'am.
Medic leaves to check on Democles.
Medic: Wow... this guy is stone from the waist down. I picked the wrong week to stop overdosing on mushrooms.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes returns.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: How is everyone going here?
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes looks at Bridgit and is concerned.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Is she going to be okay?
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes squats down to look at her.
Bridgit: I could use a nap.
Rhotinia: I wouldn't bet against her, she seems nigh on unkillable
Tilpi: Volmalric, can you just blow up this tomb?
Rhotinia: Volmalric, any luck over there with the book, or is this another dragon porn situation?
Bridgit looks at Tilpi.
Volmalric: Luck, yes
Volmalric: Also, lack of luck
Volmalric: There's plenty in here with regards to the binding rituals, defensive barriers...
GM: Dragon porn, maybe also yes, but he's not responding to that one.
Volmalric gestures at the borders of the cemetary
Volmalric: And on callings, like what we would need for Rhiveth
Volmalric: But we don't have everything. I don't think we can get everything for all three, so we may wind up having to make a choice
Tilpi: It's just a building we can do without. I'll defer to your judgement.
Rhotinia: Well Asgrim apparently went off to get something we might need
Rhotinia: Assuming he makes it back here alive
Volmalric: Assuming they're looking for what we actually need, yes
Bridgit shudders.
Bridgit tips over and begins gasping for breath.
Volmalric rips off several pieces of paper and hands it to the guard captain. The paper contains a list of instructions on one side and several pages of script, circles, and notations
Bridgit: Sophie is overdosing on Grey Lotus so badly right now, I'm having a reaction...
Volmalric: Why is she taking grey lotus?!
Volmalric: Where did they bring them to?
Volmalric: They're at the blasted inn
Volmalric: Ugh
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Lore test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.16+1d20.6 = 22]
You did succeed!
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Got it sir, we will do our best.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes rotates the paper.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: Did you mean to include this perverse drawing of the chicken doing something to this triangle?
Volmalric: These should be effective against the ghouls and against most other undead. I'd recommend figuring out a way of working them into the current situation as best you can, but there's a list of ideal materials as well that we definitely don't have. The symbolism behind them is as important as anything.
Inquisitor Captain Diogenes: I will do my best.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Survival test:
Target: 13 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [2d20.18 = 36]
You did not succeed.
Volmalric: I'm not sure the wards for the graveyard will hold out for the night, so good luck.
Tilpi attempts to light a fire and build an improvised shelter fror the wounded. Ends up with blistered, burnt fingers and wounded pride.
Volmalric: Okay, do we want to dive back in and see if we can bind Thumocris, or head back out and find Cilissa and Asgrim to summon Rhiveth?
Volmalric: I think both will save Messantia; one by beheading the horde and one by augmenting our own defenses
Rhotinia: Do you have any actual plans for how to bind Thumocris?
Rhotinia: Or just "Show up and wing it"?
Also, at one point Tilpi discovered an arrow sticking in her backpack where she likely would have been mortally injured if a Complication was rolled.
Rhotinia: Because if we don't have some plan of what to do to Thomocris, then that seems like a fool's errand
Tilpi: Rhotinia, do you have anything of Asgrims?
Rhotinia: And I don't think shooting him with arrows will do the trick
Rhotinia: No, but I do have Cilissa's badge
Tilpi: That works
Rhotinia gives Cilissa's badge to Tilpi
Tilpi used a Fortune point to add a Natural 1 to their dice pool
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Animal Handling test:
Target: 12 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 5 Momentum: 4 [1d20.1+1d20.11 = 12]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric: I have an actual plan, with some...improvised ingredients?
Tilpi Attempts to instruct her Hyrkanian steed to find Cilissa based on the badge on the idea that, it is disciplined enough to carry out the task, and too fast to be effectively caught by the ghouls especially if unburdended.
Tilpi's Horse is not sure when it developed blood-hound like abilities, but completely understands Tilpi's intent and goals and understands all of her message. It takes off at a full gallop, knifing through or knocking over any that stand in its path!
Volmalric: I have an actual plan, with some...improvised ingredients?
