The group finds themselves standing in a bright, sunny field of dandelions, daffodils, and a fragrant soft breeze wafts through the air. Tilpi feels like she is in a romanticized version of her home.
Volmalric: Wait a second
Tilpi whistles the tune of peace and love.
Volmalric: Who walked in first?
GM: No one else is currently visible, but this is 100% perfect picnic location for an afternoon away from the city.
Rhotinia: Me, same as before
Volmalric: Thumocris walked in first last time
There is a large, tree covered mountain in the distance. It looks very much like Mount Fuji on a postcard.
Volmalric: Volmalric rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.19+1d20.9 = 28]
You did succeed!
Rhotinia: Well, he is probably still in here
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.14+1d20.20 = 34]
You did not succeed.
Kazemi (Volmalric): looks around for a mountain or volcano of some sort.
Rhotinia: And he was headed for the volcano before, so we should head towards that mountain
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.1+1d20.9 = 10]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Tilpi attempts to use insight to determine how 'real' this place is.
Volmalric: Definitely not a volcano
Volmalric: But I guess close enough?
Rhotinia: I am not an expert in magic, but this strikes me as cheap illusion
Tilpi: Well, the city was an illusion of security fashioned by men. This place is an illusion shaped by magic, and it is much the better for it.
Rhotinia: Do not be decieved, we are surely still in whatever hellish dimension that was before
Rhotinia is convinced the mountain the distance is a dormant volcano, and it does look much like the previously observed volcano, if it was a few hundred years later and a lot had been given the opportunity to grow. There is a poorly tended path you are standing on which meanders in the direction of the volcano.
Volmalric: A hellish dimension can come with trees and grass
Tilpi: ...says the person with zombie guts all over herself. 'Hell'.
Tilpi doesn't look convinced.
GM: Volmalric spent a long time in a grassy, pleasant fishbowl filled with bat-demon Meltams, for instance.
Rhotinia: Either way, we had better press on
Rhotinia leads on down the path towards the volcano
Rhotinia's Horse dutifully follows along, stops to munch some tasty looking grass if allowed.
Volmalric follows Rhotinia, keeping his eyes peeled for trouble
Tilpi: Surely a druid of no mean serenity fashioned this realm. Do you really think Thumocris is capable of maintaining this?
Rhotinia: I don't know much about magic, but I know a lot about bastards. And the very worst ones are beatiful and silver-tounged.
Rhotinia: Don't let some pretty flowers warm your nethers and cloud your good sense
Volmalric: Druid is the wrong term for them
Tilpi blinks and thinks a bit. Rhotinia is beautiful and silver-tongued...
Volmalric: This is a world in a bubble, self contained but self sustaining. Just as a forest regrows after a fire, so might the landscape change itself over time
Tilpi: On we go then.
Volmalric: And time might not pass the same here as elsewhere
Tilpi: Better than the city.
About fifteen minutes of peacefully quiet walking later, the group is getting closer to the volcano (you estimate another 15-20 minutes walking will get you to the first serious incline up the gently sloping side of the volcano), you spot what looks like a small collection of buildings near the base of the volcano, in the line of the path you are following. There are 5 buildings total, they look like they are constructed of basic wood and stone, and look like the kind of thing Bossonians would build in the Pictish lands.
Tilpi: Oh no, not more buildings!
GM: They are not Hyrkianian Yurts, Tilpi is disappointed.
Volmalric: Be careful, the sorcerer has been here for an indeterminate amount of time
Rhotinia: Potentially centuries, given how much the mountain has changed
Kazemi (Volmalric): Are there people active in the town, or is it deserted?
As you are getting closer, you see a few people wandering around, engaging in normal domestic tasks, like tending animals, working in a cultivated field the size needed for self-sustaining farmers, very pastoral and perfectly sane looking to the three of you.
Tack (Meltam): Time passes, but Kazemi still will never believe in the capacity of a character played by me to actually reform.
Volmalric: Come on this way, that looks like Meltam. It's either a trap or a normal abnormality
Meltam waves at you in a cordial, friendly way.
Meltam: Hello friend! Come to sample the harvest? The fruits and grains are plentiful!
Meltam: Bless this clime....where have you been?
Volmalric: Where have YOU been?
Volmalric gives Meltam a handshake
Rhotinia: Yeah, pretty sure we saw you explode
Meltam: I woke up here after using what was left of my vitality to bring Rhiveth to battle Thumocris. I lost conciousness and woke up in this pastoral realm.
Meltam: I have to say it has been a rather halcyon and idyllic affair since then.
Volmalric: Huh
Meltam: Come come, sit down, there shall be food and drink!
Volmalric: I appreciate the effort, but I'm not sure we can spare the time
Meltam ushers you to a homey yet rustic construction.
Rhotinia: Ok, I'm not sure if you're Meltam's soul, trapped in this nether realm, or if you are some kind of trick from Thumocris, but we definitely don't have time for lunch
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Society test:
Target: 17 Focus: 5 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.10+1d20.6 = 16]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric used a Fortune point to add a Natural 1 to their dice pool
Volmalric: Volmalric rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.6+1d20.9 = 15]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Meltam doesn't look like he understands 'not have time for something'
Volmalric: Oh no
Volmalric: Hey, Meltam, what's on that mountain?
Tilpi: You are the first person who has built a permanent structure that doesn't sound insane to me. Hello Meltam.
Meltam: Isn't nature fantastic? I am so happy to be back to my farming roots. I have not known agony of mind nor body since arriving here.
Volmalric: Because it looks a lot like the volcano with the play
Volmalric: Oh, huh, well probably not the exact same mountain in that case
Tilpi looks at Volmalric and Rhotinia
Tilpi: See, i told you this was a good and real place.
Volmalric leans over to whisper something to Tilpi
Volmalric (whisper): We definitely saw Meltam explode so this is probably an afterlife of sorts. Don't eat anything
Rhotinia: Tilpi, get your head in the game. We are here for one reason: to kill or otherwise subdue Thumocris
Rhotinia used a Fortune point to add a Natural 1 to their dice pool
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Persuade test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.16+1d20.6 = 22]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric: Meltam, do you know where the sorcerer would have hidden himself?
Meltam: If there's something dangerous, yes, it would be on the mountain, or in it rather.
Volmalric: Mmmm, I'm afraid we may have to head up that way in that case.
Freyda: Hello strangers, I'm Meltam's wife, Freyda. I'm sure he introduced me while I was helping the little ones milk the Lox, but I thought I would come over here and say "hello" in person.
Meltam: You may find this place oddly resembling the Scholar King's realm, as if all realms are branches off the same base reality.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Observation test:
Target: 11 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.13+1d20.16 = 29]
You did not succeed.
Tilpi Has never seen someone that looks like Freyda.
Freyda: We do not get many strangers here, so it is a pleasure to meet you.
Freyda looks at Tilpi.
Volmalric: It is a pleasure to meet you as well. I'm glad to hear Meltam's been in good hands
Freyda: Oh, I love what you have done with your hair, is that a Hyrkanian weave?
Tilpi: You bet, it's the only thing that will stay in place at a full gallop. You must be wise to the ways of the steppe.
Tilpi instantly has respect for Freyda
Rhotinia: While I would ordinarily love to have the chance to get to meet you and exchange pleasantries, we have rather urgent business that we need to "dicsuss" with Thumocris
Freyda: I can't quite get that to work, so I usually go with these style braids, but when I fought in a mercenary band before my death, there were many Hyrkanian women in it.
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Society test:
Target: 17 Focus: 5 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.11+1d20.18 = 29]
You did succeed!
Freyda looks at Rhotinia.
Freyda: He's here?
Freyda looks at Meltam.
Rhotinia: Last time we saw him
Meltam: Hello beautiful.
Freyda: Hey you, glad your head came out of the clouds.
Freyda smacks him on the ass in a, "You are in trouble later" way.
Freyda: Wouldn't you... sense him if that were the case?
Meltam: Im sorry. I was thinking, among all these pleasantries, what caused Volmalric and Rhotinia to be here. It could not have been an overly good thing and I am suddenly concerned.
Rhotinia: Yeah, Messantia is overrun with an army of undead commanded by Thumocris
Rhotinia: Not a great day
Meltam: You must tell us? I do not have faith that these realms are infinitely stable if enough realms fall to sorcery.
Rhotinia: "fall to sorcery"? You definitely don't sound like the Meltam I met
Volmalric: I'm not sure myself. We followed Thumocris into this world, but it was a burned wasteland at the time. We stopped him, but did not kill him. When we returned, prepared to end him for good, it was like this.
Meltam: Perhaps you weren't as perceptive as you think.
Meltam: Meltam rolls a Persuade test:
Target: 10 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.16+1d20.2 = 18]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia: Or perhaps this is all a deception
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Persuade test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.15+1d20.18 = 33]
You did succeed!
Tilpi offers Freyda a golden comb.
Tilpi: Here, you can use this better than I can.
Freyda: Oh thank you!
Tilpi: You are most hospitable and this world is wonderful!
Freyda: It is our little slice of the afterlife.
Volmalric: The man's aged fifty years, he's liable to have changed
Volmalric: We should go explore the volcano, see if we can find signs of the sorcerer
Meltam dutifully retreats into the house as to prepare for guests
Rhotinia: Agreed, while this has been most interesting, we cannot lose sight of stakes here
Volmalric: I, uh, recommend getting your things together, Miss Freyda. In case the volcano spontaneously erupts, you and your village will want to be in a position to flee.
Freyda: Right, if Thumocris is here, then we need to do something about it. Although I would somewhat expect Rhiveth to have stopped by at some point to warn us. This strikes me as the kind of thing she would tell us about.
Meltam agrees fully with Freyda.
Rhotinia: Rhiveth is in this realm?
Freyda: Not a problem, we have everything packed up and ready to move in short order. We practice evacuation plans the night of the new moon. It is a habit for the children and I.
Meltam: It seems more likely the portal to here was decaying, and threw you to this realm capriciously.
Volmalric: Mmmm, when was the last time you spoke with Rhiveth?
Freyda: Sometimes, to be fair, I think she is easily distracted and stretched a bit thin. I think she tries to do too much.
Freyda looks at Meltam.
Freyda: Two months ago? Maybe. Do you remember specifically?
Freyda: I think you said she visited when I took the kids to the village a day south of here for the festival.
Volmalric: Are her visits normally many months between?
Rhotinia: If Rhiveth is here, we might need to adjust our plan
Meltam: Time is a strange concept now.
Freyda: She comes and goes.
Freyda nods in agreement with Meltam.
Freyda: Yeah, I was pregnant for our first child for what seemed like ten years. The second one I barely remember.
Rhotinia: Perhaps Meltam can help us with the book
Volmalric: In what sense?
Rhotinia: If Rhiveth is tied to this place, we may be able to summon her fully from here
Volmalric: We could try to summon her; it should be easier her, if she's often here. However, she may not be able to leave through the same portal we would leave through
Rhotinia: And take her back with us
Meltam's face washes over with fear.
Rhotinia: And Meltam seems... wise, as much as I cannot believe myself to be uttering the words
Meltam: Meltam rolls an Insight test:
Target: 11 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.5+1d20.7 = 12]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Meltam: Believe it. You'd be amazed at the ways the phenomenal world paints our perceptions and actions.
Volmalric: Do tell
Tilpi has become throughly distracted by picking flowers and herbs
Meltam: Rhotinia, I do not wish to summon Rhiveth here. I have a suspicion this entire realm is only really sustained by her thoughts and will.
Several of Meltam and Freyda's kids run over and start hanging out with the "cool Hyrkanian woman" and also get easily distracted by her.
Volmalric: Oh, hm
Volmalric: If she's sustaining this realm, that would...be bad
Meltam: Methinks summoning her would make us a nagging thought she can't ignore.
Meltam: Yes
Volmalric: Sort of like trying to put a table on a plate that's on the table
Meltam: However, I can provision you for the trip.
Volmalric: How long is the trip?
Volmalric: Oh!
Volmalric: If you have a horse you could lend, that would be surperb
Volmalric: We could cut our travel time down dramatically
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Survival test:
Target: 13 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.10+1d20.3 = 13]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric rumages through his bag for something to trade
Volmalric: I'm afraid most of my wares would be useless to you here in this rural environment, but I do have seeds for some spices in here. Depending on what you have, they may be a welcome change to cuisine
Meltam: You owe me nothing. If you truly still be alive, what's mine is yours.
Meltam: You may find the horses here to be strange, as if they fell from the mind of a god.
Volmalric: Pardon?
Tilpi: Horses? Where?
Meltam: Freyda, I will provision them.
Freyda: Okay, whatever they need, I am happy to help out.
Freyda: We have some different types of mead I have been brewing.
Meltam motions Rhotinia Volmalric, and Tilpi to the stables. While at first glance the horses look quite mundane, in various coat colors of chesnut, you can't help but notice they have twice as many legs as would be normal.
Rhotinia's Horse feels slight leg envy.
Tilpi: That...Those...How>
Rhotinia: I think I will stick with the horse I came in on
Tilpi looks dumbfounded.
Rhotinia pats her warhorse on the back
Rhotinia's Horse nuzzles Rhotinia.
Volmalric: Volmalric rolls a Lore test:
Target: 12 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.2+1d20.9 = 11]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia: I don't know that more legs are necessarily better...
Rhotinia's Horse nods in agreement.
Meltam: I have learned not to question or interfere with the imagination of higher beings.
Volmalric: Mmm, I guess it makes sense given the Asgardian nature of them
Meltam nods in sharp agreement.
Meltam: I think you'd best remember that logic, if you are do do well in an Asgardian dream.
Tilpi: Doesn't having that many legs....behoove them?
Feneril (Rhotinia): ba dump tsh
Meltam: Apparently Not. They are swift and true like nothing I have ever ridden.
Freyda: So the volcano is a warren of old lava tubes, most are quite large. Very little is encountered there, but given that you are here, I suspect it will be more dangerous than normal.
Freyda frowns.
Volmalric: Sorcerery of some sort, I'd bet
Freyda: The more I think about this, the more I suspect the risk of random, unexpected, cataclysmic volcanic eruption seems likely. Because, your presence here heralds change, and I'm not sure change is a good thing for us, whether it is good for you or not.
Freyda looks at Meltam.
Freyda: Wait, they said Messantia was overrun with undead, isn't that how you died? So, we have been here for long years and it has been a day or two to them.
Meltam: I fear you are correct.
Rhotinia: Yes, that seems to be the case
Freyda shrugs.
Freyda: Nevermind, I shall ignore the vagaries of sorcery and this pocket dimension we reside in.
Freyda prepares the "horses" for travel.
Rhotinia mounts her horse
Freyda: In any case, they will serve you well. We shall pack up the kids and items on the Lox and head out. I'm sure the children will look forward to an unexpected camping trip.
Freyda pats the horses when she says the word, "they".
Volmalric mounts a horse as well
Volmalric: It's appreciated, Freyda. It was a pleasure to meet you and see Meltam again.
Meltam appears distracted, lost totally in thought.
Volmalric holds out a hand for Meltam to shake again
Meltam: Oh..yes dear that sounds lovely.
Volmalric: Meltam? Penny for your thoughts?
Meltam shakes Volmalric's hand.
Volmalric: Oh,speaking of thoughts, what is Bridgit?
Freyda finishes prepping things. She evidently did not hear Volmalric's question.
Meltam: That I was never certain on. Whatever being was in that Messantian tomb charged me with recovering its children. I thought Brigit and Sophie were them.
Meltam: It was actually rather rash of me, but the being, of which I can say the name but it would be most unwise here, imparted the task on me with such an emotional zeal that I could not refuse. I felt as if it had been harmed by humanity in general.
Volmalric: And Cilissa. We've discovered Bridgit is Sophie and Cilissa's mother.
Meltam 's face looks as if he had been picked by a pin.
Meltam: Huh.
Rhotinia: At least there is one family on this earth with a more fucked up mother daughter relationship than my own
Meltam: Yeah that one is a real boggle.
Freyda: True, it is somehow always possible to find people in a greater state of familial discord than yourself. By the way, if you see anything that looks like a larged winged ape, it is best to shoot first and ask questions later. They are very uncommon here, but they do sometimes show up around the peak of the volcano. Very occasionally one will fly low enough to be spotted.
Freyda: I normally give them no thought, as Meltam and I and many others cleared out the bulk of them years ago, but given that you are here, and likely to kick over the proverbial hornet's nest, who knows what you will uncover.
Meltam nods.
Rhotinia: Joy of joys
Meltam: Our reality may be a dream to them. The hazards they find may be much different.
Freyda: Best of luck to you, strangers!
