Soldier: That is a lot of fire!
Soldier gestures out through the window and over the walls at a distant reddish point.
Slumbara: We can have a barbeque
Slumbara: Or roast marshmallows
Hauk: Hmm...that looks like where the Pict Raven village should be. We should investigate, maybe we can get an idea of who this strange white-skinned man is.
Soldier looks at Slumbara.
Soldier: That sounds great, especially if dead Picts are involved!
Captain Estarcus sighs.
Slumbara holds up his chain of pict heads
Slumbara: I have killed many picts today
Soldier is in awe of Slumbara.
Captain Estarcus sighs.
Slumbara: But you cannot cook and eat these, I am going to sell them later
Hauk shrugs.
Soldier looks green at Slumbara's suggestion, runs outside and hurls.
Captain Estarcus: Well Hauk, you are in no condition to travel. At least rest for the night and go in the morning, wandering around in the dark injured is a sure way to die.
Captain Estarcus looks at the assembled group.
Meltam Perandus looks back.
Slumbara hands Captain Estarcus a business card with his daily and weekly rates on it
Captain Estarcus looks at the random scribbles on a piece of tree bark that Slumbara has given him and thinks this might be a good idea down the road, in other ages of mankind.
Captain Estarcus: And of course, I'll be happy to pay you to continue to work with my Gunderman friend here and get to the bottom of this strange white-skinned man who is riling up the Picts.
Captain Estarcus walks out of the barracks.
Hauk: Well now, I'm going to get a good nap and we can go in the morning.
Slumbara: Yes, right after we discuss our payment with your captain
Hauk is going to roll over on his bunk and take a nap unless someone wants to ask him questions.
Volmalric: Payment and continued payment sound fantastic!
Slumbara: Observation 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 35]
Meltam Perandus: So Hauk, when did these particular Raven Picts start intensifying this nonsense?
Slumbara finds an unclaimed bunk and goes to sleep, laying his pack and chain of pict heads on the floor beside
Captain Estarcus has already agreed to pay you 1 Gold per month and you can bunk in the scout's barracks. You even have a bed and a foot locker assigned to you by the quartermaster.
Kazemi (Volmalric): Slumbara Snuggle Time
Quartermaster: Right, that is a good spot for the Kushite.
Slumbara: Observation 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 11]
Slumbara stuffs his chain of pict heads into his footlocker
Meltam Perandus: You know Slumbara, some people content themselves with the ears of their defeated. Something tells me you are going to take on a burden at this rate...
Volmalric claims a bunk and locker as well, putting his things away in his locker and restringing his bow, making sure that his equipment is clean and properly maintained
Meltam Perandus: Society 4EXP/4FOC Successes = 4 [2d20 = 7]
Hauk: The Raven Picts normally are among the least aggressive of them.
Hauk: They actually have demonstrated a willingness to trade and occasionally receive Mitran missionaries for a whole week before running them off, which is better than the half hour life span Mitran clerics have in other villages.
Slumbara: They would live longer if they were strong like Slumbara
Meltam Perandus: We should instead pose as Mitran Missionaries and poison their water supply, better way to rid ourselves of these uncivilized dogs....
Hauk: That is quite true, large scary black man.
Tack (Meltam Perandus): Not any more =D
Kazemi (Volmalric): xD
Kazemi (Volmalric): They're hiding in the fridge
Slumbara: Poison is not an honorable way to kill a man
Slumbara: Better to cut his head off
Hauk: I'm pretty sure people have tried that already. Picts are generally regarded as dogs to be killed by most people, so all manner of underhandedness goes into vermin removal.
Hauk: But I agree with Slumbara.
Volmalric: When did the aggression of the Raven Picts start?
Hauk: Honestly, this was the first I have seen of it.
Hauk: They generally are not violent, they have some sort of mystical order from some Pict Shaman Council or something and it is considered more important for them to deal with that than fight the vile white man invaders.
Meltam Perandus: I see. So it would be prudent then to assume they were only roused from their peaceful ways, by Pictish standards, when two groups started kicking around in search of.....things?
Slumbara: We can ask them before we kill them for money
Slumbara: And sell their heads
Slumbara: Slumbara can talk to anyone
Hauk: That seems likely, Meltam.
Slumbara: Slumbara is very good at making friends
Volmalric glances at the locker with blood seeping out of the bottom of it
Slumbara looks at Volmalric
Volmalric: And very good at ending your day with fewer enemies
Slumbara: I did not say Slumbara is good at keeping friends
Volmalric raises an eyebrow
Kazemi (Volmalric): I'm good to continue whenever xD
Slumbara: It is ok friend, you are safe with Slumbara. No one would pay me to kill you
Meltam Perandus: Anyone in this outpost who might know more about the Ravens and their ways?
Feneril (Slumbara): BRB, wifey need me
Hauk: The Captain might know a bit more. or possibly some of the other frontiersmen and scouts.
Hauk: The Ravens are a bit of a quiet enigma.
Hauk rolls over and goes to sleep.
The next morning dawns crisp, cold, and bright.
Meltam Perandus: Observation 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 21]
There is frost on the ground and you can see your breath when you walk outside.
Tack (Meltam Perandus): I would like to use that to get an Idea what Volmalric is like.
Hauk is up and ready to go.
Feneril (Slumbara): back
Meltam Perandus: SO....Volmalric, how did you end up here?
Volmalric grins widely, turning to face Meltam as they walk
Volmalric: I'm from Aquilonia! Returning after a rather rough time abroad, and striving to get more out of life than what was originally dealt to me.
Baron Trebellius: In Mitra's Name, it is freaking cold. This is stupid to even live here.
Baron Trebellius turns around and heads back to his house without acknowledging you.
Slumbara: The fat man finally said a smart thing
Quartermaster issues you all some trail rations, canteens, and gives Volmaric a second bow string and some extra arrows.
Captain Estarcus: Good morning all. Brisk and cool this morning.
Volmalric: There are colder days, so you're best to get used to it or wear more layers
Meltam Perandus: He said a dumb thing - anyone who does not appreciate a brisk morning might just be a little softened by city life.
Kazemi (Volmalric): To Slumbara
Slumbara ties his heads back to his pack and loads up his provisions from the quartermaster
Volmalric: Here, let's swing by the boards on the way out to see if anything's come up recently
Captain Estarcus: All right, head north and we have some canoes ready for you at the edge of the river. Paddle across and see what you can find out about the Raven tribe and this strange man.
Meltam Perandus: Aye Aye Captain!
Captain Estarcus gives you a quick salute and resumes his rounds.
You are in Velitrium.
Slumbara: We can stop by Fort Tuscelan on the way back to sell these heads
Meltam Perandus: If Slumbara was really strong, you'd attach a note to those heads and hurl them across the provence!
Slumbara ponders Meltam Perandus' suggestion
Volmalric: Lore 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 4 [2d20 = 2]
Slumbara turns to Captain Estarcus
Slumbara: Which direction is Fort Tuscelan?
Volmalric: Unfortunately, Slumbara, Fort Tuscelan is a few days walk away
Meltam Perandus: why don't you wait until you get a few more before you cash in?
Slumbara: That is dissapointing
Meltam Perandus: I bet they'd give you a hundred heads worth for the Albinio Shaman.
Slumbara posts a notice on the notice board: "For sale: 7 pict heads, slightly used"
Volmalric: I suspect the Albino Shaman may even get us a reward here
Slumbara: Yes, lets go
Slumbara puts the heads back on his pack
Slumbara heads north out of town to earn an honest wage, killing people for money
Hauk follows along behind Slumbara.
Meltam Perandus follows the large appliance.
Hauk directs the group to a secluded landing where a small unit of scouts hides and observes. They have 2 canoes ready for you so you can cross the river.
Volmalric strolls along alongside Meltam
Volmalric: So, Meltam, what brings you to these lands?
Meltam Perandus: Money.
Slumbara: He killed some of my coworkers
Slumbara: But it is ok, less coworkers means more pay for Slumbara
Volmalric: Sounds like a hostile work environment
Hauk: Any of you have experience paddling a canoe?
Slumbara: But it has medical, dental and a 401k
Volmalric: I have some
Meltam Perandus: Professionalism should prevent either of us from holding a grudge eh? Just business.
Slumbara: Yes friend, it is ok
Slumbara: I killed many of your coworkers too
Meltam Perandus: I should be able to paddle just fine.
Meltam Perandus: Agility - 11 Successes = 0 [2d20 = 28]
Volmalric: Sailing 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 21]
Slumbara: Sailing 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 22]
Kazemi (Volmalric): "Slumbara makes it across the river very quickly, but upside down"
Slumbara grabs a paddle and throws Meltam Perandus into the canoe
Hauk and Volmaric make it across the river without any issues.
Slumbara gets distracted by the sudden shifting of Pict heads on his pack and tries to correct it, which causes the canoe to tip over, dumping Slumbara and Meltam into the water with a loud splash.
Suddenly, a Pict war cry is heard from the edge of the river not far from Hauk and Volmaric.
Meltam Perandus: Acrobatics Successes = 1 [2d20 = 22]
Meltam Perandus: Athletics Successes = 1 [2d20 = 19]
Slumbara: It is ok friend, I will save you
Meltam avoids losing his gear and swims to shore this round.
Slumbara grabs Meltam Perandus (regardless of his own success) and swims for shore
Meltam Perandus: Parry 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 24]
Slumbara: Melee 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 29]
Slumbara: Athletics 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 37]
Slumbara tries to grabble Meltam but starts drowning.

Pict: ¦¦ Knife (M): [4d6 = 6]
Kazemi (Volmalric): Tell me more about this Pict war cry
Pict: ¦¦ Bow (R): [4d6 = 12]
Slumbara gets peppered by arrows and begins bleeding from small cuts.
Meltam Perandus: ...and I thought Kushites were natural survivors close to nature...
Slumbara: I am from the desert
Hauk: Acrobatics, Stealth Successes = 2 [2d20 = 16]
Slumbara: It is ok friend, I will save you soon
Slumbara: Just be patient
Volmaric can guess where Picts might be, but he can't see any there.
Meltam Perandus: Insight 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 15]
Meltam Perandus: Observation 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 13]
Kazemi (Volmalric): Picts are animate....for now
Feneril (Slumbara): Inspecting people, places, and information closely. Recognizing patterns. Discerning if someone is lying. Recognizing the presence of the unnatural or supernatural.
GM: Thanks Fen - that is a much more concise and better explanation than what I was providing.
Volmalric strings his bow anyways, firing an arrow off into the trees
Volmalric: Slumbara, Meltam, we've got more heads!
Volmalric: Ranged Weapons 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 18]
Slumbara: I will be there soon, I just need to save Meltam first
Meltam Perandus: Intimidate: (Close-Mental-Stun-2D): [2d6 = 6]
Meltam Perandus: Persuade 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 3 [2d20 = 9]
Pict: Discipline Successes = 0 [2d20 = 40]
Meltam Perandus: A swift death awaits you cowardly dogs!
Slumbara: Athletics 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 35]
Slumbara: Athletics 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 22]
Slumbara flounders around in the water while being peppered with arrows. Somehow he manages to drag himself to shore but it is dispiriting for the rest of the group to watch the comedic display.
Meltam Perandus: Mace: (Reach 2-Unb-Knockdown-Stun-Pierce 1-3D): [4d6 = 9]
Meltam Perandus: Intimidate: (Close-Mental-Stun-2D): [2d6 = 12]
Metalm emerges from the water holding Slumbara's bag of Pict heads. They dump on the ground in front of him as the bag tears apart.
Meltam Perandus: Flee now, savages! An ambush will not prevail against our might!
The smell of mass defecation reaches your nostrils and screams of terror come from the woods. You hear an outright rout and panic from the Picts who flee helter-skelter in mortal terror.
GM: THe Picts rolled 20-20 to resist intimidation.
Hauk: Wow.
Hauk: I'm, kind of...impressed that even worked.
Slumbara: You should be more careful next time though. You should stay behind Slumbara or you may be injured
Slumbara: This place is dangerous
Meltam Perandus: Clearly some mercenaries here have earned a reputation. (glances at the river and a water-logged fridge)
Hauk: Okay, let's see if we can find the Raven village. It is this way.
Slumbara gathers up his heads and heads towards the tree line
Meltam Perandus: Persuade 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 37]
Slumbara: Survival 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 17]
Slumbara touches the pict footprint while trying his best to ignore Meltam Perandus' terrible motivational speech
Meltam tries to "help" and it goes horribly awry.
It takes the better part of day but Slumbara is able to find the clearing to the Raven village.
Meltam Perandus: Stealth 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 31]
Volmalric: Survival 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 16]
The front gates are open and there are a multitude of trailing wisps of black smoke from the inside. The area is eerily quiet, in fact, you realize you have not heard any animals for the better part of an hour. The village is on a low hill surrounded by an intact wooden pallisade.
Meltam Perandus: Sorcery 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 38]
Volmalric: Insight Successes = 0 [2d20 = 32]
Volmalric: Seems pretty natural to me
Slumbara: They must have fled when they heard Slumbara was coming
Slumbara: Animal Handling 4EXP/4FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 20]
Meltam Perandus: Discipline Successes = 0 [2d20 = 26]
Slumbara: Melee 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 27]
Slumbara: No friend, sorcery is dangerous
Slumbara: Do not use sorcery
Slumbara backhands Meltam Perandus across the face
Meltam Perandus: Ouch!....thanks Friend.
Meltam's eyes glaze over for a moment, and Slumbara punches him. The Bossonian falls on his ass.
Volmalric: Sorcery?
Slumbara looks for signs of recent Pictish occupation
Volmalric: He was just looking around
Slumbara: Survival 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 12]
Volmalric: Insight Successes = 0 [2d20 = 22]
Slumbara notices that a large number of people have recently fled the village in a hurry.
Tack (Meltam Perandus): The only thing I really thought about it, is that it should encourage characters to keep doing what they do best to milk momentum.
GM: Yeah, but you max at 6 Momentum and if the test doesn't count, you can't gain Momentum from it.
Slumbara: Yes, I was right. They must have heard that Slumbara was coming
Slumbara: And they fled
Volmalric: That smoke seems like it bodes poorly
Slumbara: We should search their village for evidence of this white sorcerer
Hauk: Yeah, too much of it. I suspect something bad happened here.
Hauk: I agree, lead on brave Slumbara.
Meltam Perandus: Thievery 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 29]
Slumbara: looking for something that looks like a village leader's hut
Slumbara: Observation 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 16]
Volmalric: Observation Successes = 1 [2d20 = 23]
Slumbara walks in through the front gates and discovers that the village has been torched. No buildings are standing, just ruined and burned stumps. He sees no signs of bodies.
Kazemi (Volmalric): This means that someone has cheated him out of his extra pay
Slumbara: They must have truly feared Slumbara to burn their entire village to the ground
Volmalric: Or someone else did it for them
Slumbara: You have some truly strange ideas
Meltam Perandus: Lore 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 11]
Meltam Perandus: Why would they burn down their own village?
Volmaric notices one body actually, it looks like a Pict is staked out in the middle of the village...but someone also drove a wooden log the size of one of the pallisade logs through his abdomen. Disturbingly, the body is still twitching.
Volmalric: I don't think they would
Slumbara: We should ask him
Volmalric: Ho there, Friend!
Hauk: This...this place is unnatural.
Hauk: If you don't mind, I'm going to go...stand guard...at the front entrance.
Volmalric glances at Hauk
Volmalric: Seems perfectly fine to me, but if you do please do keep an eye out
Hauk backs up.
Slumbara: Hello friend, why did you burn down your village?
Slumbara: Was it because you heard Slumbara was coming?
Volmalric: Slumbara, that's rude
Ahanu (Kushite): Dark-skinned one from distant lands, you are not the first of your kind I have seen today.
Volmalric: Lore 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 3 [2d20 = 11]
Slumbara (Kushite): You are from Kush? You don't look it
Tack and Fen, make Observation checks.
Volmalric: Linguistics 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 27]
Slumbara: Observation 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 12]
Volmalric: Kushite?
Slumbara nods at Volmalric
Ahanu is most definitely a Pict, complete with blue tattoes and smashed headdress.
Meltam Perandus: Observation 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 35]
Slumbara (Kushite): what other Kushite have you seen today?
Meltam Perandus: I'd think the rest of your surviving company has found another employer....or else been raised to serve again.....
Slumbara walks over to the man
Ahanu (Kushite): Others, in chains, heading into the Place of Whispering Fog.
Meltam Perandus: Ah!
Slumbara: Where did you get this tatoo?
Volmalric: Which way?
Slumbara: Slumbara would like to get one just like it
Volmalric: Lore 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 27]
Slumbara points to the tatoo on Ahanu's chest
Ahanu (Aquilonian): My tattoes are sacred and valuable, they are important to the Picts.
Slumbara: How valuable?
Slumbara: I terms of gold
Slumbara takes out a skinning knife
Slumbara: Persuade 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 21]
Volmalric: Slumbara, stop
Volmalric: How did you get that tattoo? That's an Acheronian tattoo
Slumbara: It is ok friend, I am not actually going to cut off his tatoo
Ahanu (Aquilonian): Gold, gold means nothing petty creature.
Slumbara: It is called good-cop, bad-cop
Volmalric: What's a cop?
Ahanu's eyes roll to look at Volmaric.
Volmalric focuses on the impaled man
Slumbara: It is Kushite saying
Slumbara: Do not worry my friend
Ahanu (Aquilonian): It is a binding, something to keep me from moving. No, no, let your friend cut it off.
Slumbara shrugs
Slumbara: Ok
Slumbara cuts the tattoo off the man's chest
Slumbara: Melee 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 3 [2d20 = 10]
Meltam Perandus: So....what exactly happened here?
Ahanu: That stings a little, and wow, that is an amazing amount of blood. I forget that humans have so much in their system...
Slumbara stuffs the tatoo'd flap of skin into his pack
Volmalric: You probably don't want that
Volmalric: It's got sorcery written all over it
Volmalric: Healing 3EXP/3FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 22]
Slumbara: It is ok friend, do not worry about Slumbara
Ahanu (Aquilonian): Well, the folk of the Raven were long ago ordered to guarded against the rise of creatures from the Place of Whispering Fog. They failed. To quote an ancient Atlantean Fable, do not open the doors of darkness without being able to close them again.
Meltam Perandus: I see. And how are you able to speak in such a condition?
Slumbara: He sounds like a spirit
Volmalric turns a little pale
Volmalric: What are you?
Ahanu (Kushite): I like that, friend Slumbara. Yes, I am a friendly spirit.
Slumbara: I bet that is why he wasn't afraid of Slumbara
Ahanu: Oh, just a friendly happy spirit, not dangerous at all.
Volmalric: Insight Successes = 0 [2d20 = 29]
Slumbara: Insight Successes = 0 [2d20 = 35]
Meltam Perandus: That....seems odd. Are you imprisoned in that dead Pict?
Ahanu: Well, I was, until someone nicely cut that tattoo off me.
Meltam Perandus: I have heard of few spirits clinging to this world that can be described as purely benevolent.
Ahanu: Once we are done with this chat, I'm sure I'll find something exciting to do.
Meltam Perandus: Ah! Praise Slumbara, liberator of spirits!
Meltam Perandus is using a Hero Point
Meltam Perandus: Insight 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 34]
Meltam Perandus: [1d20 = 6]
Slumbara: Spirit friend, have you seen a stygian sorcerer
Slumbara: I need to speak with him about the matter of my back pay
Ahanu: I have, but he ran quickly in terror after urinating on himself quite excessively.
In Meltam Perandus' Fortune Point assisted opinion, the creature in Ahanu's body is probably not a beneficial and happy spirit, but not entirely evil either. More of a curious and bemused creature than something out to destroy humanity.
Slumbara: Did you see what happened here?
Slumbara: Volmalric and I disagree about what happened. I think that the people burned their homes to the ground and fled when they heard that Slumbara was approaching
Slumbara: Volmalric thinks there was foul play
Meltam Perandus: Lore 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 18]
Meltam Perandus is using a Hero Point
Ahanu: Actually I did see what happened. A certain creature that had been trapped for millennia within the Place of Whispering Fog knew the Raven tribe was a threat and descended upon the village and enslaved or killed the inhabitants and burned everything to the ground. I tried to fight against him, but a large number of your Kushite brethren were able to pin this hapless body down while the creature rammed this rather large wooden pole through my abdomen and then carved that nasty warding glyph into this body's chest.
Slumbara nods knowingly
Slumbara: I am not surprised that the Kushites were able to overpower your meat puppet. Kushites are very strong
Slumbara: Like Slumbara
Ahanu: Oh, I am quite impressed with the bravery of your Kushite brethren.
Slumbara: You should come back to Velitrium with us, they were very curious what happened here
Slumbara: You can explain it to them
Slumbara: Have you seen an albino shaman?
Meltam Perandus: I am not certain the people of Velitrium would be most accomodating of that.
Ahanu: I have seen no albino shaman.
Meltam Perandus: Insight 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 24]
Meltam believes Ahanu entirely, the creature has not seen an albino shaman.
Meltam Perandus: Very interesting.
Slumbara: Well, I hate to be rude. But I have to look for signs of the shaman. Meltam can keep you company
Slumbara: Slumbara is on the job though
Meltam Perandus: It's entirely possible then, whichever creature this is, can take on human form.
Slumbara searches for signs of an albino shaman having been in the village
Slumbara: Survival 1EXP/1FOC Successes = 0 [2d20 = 24]
Volmalric: Observation Successes = 0 [2d20 = 27]

Slumbara: I see no sign of the albino sorcerer
Ahanu: Oh, I'm quite certain it can adopt human form.
Meltam Perandus: Ah ha! Then it all makes sense!
Slumbara: Insight Successes = 1 [2d20 = 18]
Slumbara: Ah, is it you then?
Kazemi (Volmalric): This is literal torture
Slumbara: I am confused
Ahanu: No, I fought against the creature. I am a benevolent and kind spirit that only wants to help you.
Slumbara: This job is more difficult than it seemed at first
Volmalric: Lore 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 2 [2d20 = 14]

Meltam Perandus: Come Friends! We must do battle with the Evil in the Place of Whispering Fog!
Slumbara: Discipline 2EXP/2FOC Successes = 1 [2d20 = 21]
Meltam Perandus: This land shall be forever blighted until it is cleansed from such overpowering evil! Surely the Picts are just pawn in some game of the gods!
Ahanu: Well, good luck with that. I'm going to head out since you've freed me. Slumbara, feel free to take this head since I don't need it anymore.
Slumbara: It is ok friend, you can keep it
There is a weird crackle and a bolt of lightning shoot UP from the ground.
Tack (Meltam Perandus): I feel like this is a terrible re-enactmet of the great Nate incident of early 2015
You all drop to the ground and scream in pain as the spirit leaves the area. You contort and howl in pain and it takes about ten minutes for the screaming to stop. When it does, you have blood running from your ears, noses, and eyes, and splitting headaches.
