Savage Worlds Ruleset for Fantasy Grounds II
(c) 2009 Pinnacle Entertainment Group.
It is about 0530 the next morning when the sirens in the base blare into life.
Randall Breckenridge: Attack?
Dugan: Tornado!
There is a flurry of activity at the landing field as numerous helicopters come in. Over at the armory dozens of soldiers are gathering and weapons are being quickly distributed.
Dugan: hits the snooze button and rolls over
Sergeant Donegal: Move it slugs, and pack for bear.
Dugan: thinks .. snooze doesn't seem to be working
Randall Breckenridge scrambles to get ready
Dugan: we're going bear hunting?
Ranger Richard: Sounds like a good plan to grab weapons!
Dugan: I didn't know there were bear's in this part of the country side
Dugan: maybe you are thinking of pandas
Several members of the squad run past.
Dugan: I hear that pandas are fluffy
Dugan: Do they shed?
Dugan: I bet that makes them easy to track
Sergeant Donegal: Anyone not on the ready line in five minutes will be considered AWOL. That's my only warning.
Dugan: But they probably have camo on under that pelt
Dugan: that would make them hard to find
Ranger Richard: Whats going on Sarge!
He heads over to the helicopter field. You notice that he is carrying extra M60 ammo for Hogpile.
Withers stops.
Dugan: grabs his gear and follows his squad out the door
Ranger Richard: Grabs gear and heads to ready line
Dugan: to the ready line
Randall Breckenridge: on the ready line...
Dugan: wazzup sarge?
Dugan: he thinks
Corporal Withers: Looks like several platoons of VC are hitting a forward base. Tomkins' company is heading up to reinforce.
Corporal Withers: So move it. And bring about three times as much ammo as normal.
Five minutes later (assuming you are all at the ready line) Sergeant Donegal orders everyone into a chopper.
Dugan: Loads up on the recommended ammo .. that's heavy!
Ranger Richard: I dont even know if I can fita ll that ammo in my gear :)
As the choppers lift off, the Base loudspeakers start playing "Ride of the Valkyries."
Alberts: That seems strangely appropriate.
Ranger Richard: nice song!
Dugan: whistles along
The choppers are heading north, Sarge starts yelling to be heard over the sound of the rotors.
Sergeant Donegal: About 45 minutes ago, a platoon from Charlie company made contact with the VC at a listening post north of here.
Sergeant Donegal: They have come under heavy fire. Based on intel gathered, MACV-SIG thinks we might be facing a company or more of VC.
Dugan: I don't think they covered how big a company is in my basic training...
Ranger Richard: lets take care of that!
Randall Breckenridge: we goin in the front door o the back door?
Dugan: I'm guessing its more than 3 and less than 12
Sergeant Donegal: So the war is on, and the LZ is going to be hot. When we touch down drop low and shoot at anything not in a US uniform.
Corporal Withers: Probably about a 100 Dugan.
Ranger Richard: company around 110-130 on avg
Dugan: Because whenever I was at home, and mom said that company was comin...
Dugan: oh
Dugan: we never had that many over
Dugan: they sure do things differently out here
Alberts: No Dugan, we aren't all taking off our shoes so you can count that high.
Dugan: loads gun, checks equipment, prepares to take over the world
Sergeant Donegal: Harbin's platoon is going in first. The rest of Tomkin's company is coming in as fast as they can mobilize the choppers.
Randall Breckenridge: is the LZ at the post, or we are fighting toward it?
"Hogpile": Not to ask any picky questions, but where are the kill-count leaders?
Corporal Withers: They weren't on the Ready Line Hogpile.
Dugan: It's time to rewrite the scoreboard boys
Sergeant Donegal: We are going in as close to the LZ as possible. It is like the post we were at a couple weeks ago with the Doktor.
Dugan: How many friendlies are in the area?
Randall Breckenridge: we supposed to just take out VC then, and let them other boys take care of themselves?
Randall Breckenridge: in other words, is this a fishin contest, or a coon hunt?
Sergeant Donegal: The friendlies are going to be the guys in the listening post, assuming we still hold it, and Tomkin's company.
Sergeant Donegal: Er...not sure how to answer the second question Marine, but to answer the first one, we are taking out the VC and rescuing our people in the listening post.
Randall Breckenridge: got it sarge
Dugan: I hunted a coon once ... easy to find, with a big rac
Dugan: laughs uncontrollably
Randall Breckenridge: you is a funny one. Bit green, but funny.
Ranger Richard: funny crazy
A trio of F-100 Super Sabres screams through the sky above you, rocket pods firing at some target to the north.
Dugan: oh boy! fireworks
Randall Breckenridge: Woo hoo!
"Bookworm": I hope those pilots have good aim.
Ranger Richard: better than 4th of July
Donegal looks out the front of the chopper.
[w] Randall Breckenridge: see any groundfire at our choppers?
Sergeant Donegal: I'd say we have about five minutes before landing. Check your gear. Pray if you are so inclined.
[w] -> Randall Breckenridge: Notice check.
Randall Breckenridge: Notice {+2 Alertness} [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6+2 = 5]
[w] -> Randall Breckenridge: Not that you can see from here.
Alberts: In the event of Richard's untimely death, I call dibs on the statue.
Randall Breckenridge makes sure weapons and gear ready
Dugan: mumbles under his breath ... all you can make out is bits and pieces ... but you swear that it sounded like ..fred..
Randall Breckenridge: Statue?
Corporal Withers: Shh...Alberts stu-fu.
Alberts: Oh right. Yeah, I mean that Hindu Sex Goddess statue he has of course.
"Hogpile": Errr...
Sergeant Donegal: You people are sick.
Ranger Richard: we will have to show you are cool statue after all this is over
Randall Breckenridge: hmm, sounds a little strange to me...
The choppers continue north for another few minutes.
GM: Notice checks please.
Randall Breckenridge: Notice {+2 Alertness} [1d6+2 = 6]
Ranger Richard: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 4]
Dugan: Notice [1d6 = 4]
Corporal Withers: Notice [1d8 = 12]
Ranger Richard: oops 4 was first roll
Randall and Corporal Withers point at a smoke trail coming from the ground just as the Huey next to you erupts in a ball of flame.
Corporal Withers: There!
The door gunners open up at the spot in the jungle where Withers is pointing.
As you swoop over the canopy and into an open field, you see tracers flying from the listening post into the jungle, and a signifcantly larger amount of gunfire coming from all directions at the listening post and the choppers.
Alberts: This looks decidely unhealthy.
Randall Breckenridge: we can wup them
TADM: Just a sec, building battle tracker.
Dugan: I lost count .. how many of us are there?
Dugan: one.. two.. three... ...
GM: 10
Dugan: did someone remember the bandaids?
McConnall: I've got them.
Ranger Richard: tis merely a fleash wound
The helicopter swings in and is pulled back to a hover. As the next helicopter swings in the cockpit is sprayed by machine gun fire. It nosedives into the ground, a few soldiers jump free just before it explodes.
Sergeant Donegal: Out and drop!
Randall Breckenridge hops out and rolls away
Dugan: jumps out of the heli like he's on fire .. stop .. drop & roll
Donegal, Withers, Hogpile, Alberts, Bookworm, McConnall, and Johannsen jump out of the chopper and take cover in the tall grass.
Dugan: takes cover in the tall grass
As Richard jumps out, the helicopter takes off. A little overhead, a pair of Huey gunships fire rocket pods into the jungle.
Randall Breckenridge: sarge, which way we attackin?
Round 1
The deck has been shuffled.
Dealing cards...
Sergeant Donegal: The listening post is south of the landing zone. Heads towards it.
Ranger Richard: darn-brb having some kid/dinner issues!
Other choppers swoop in and deposit soldiers. A couple mortar shells land in the LZ.

The Viet Cong fire a whole lot of ammunition at you. Johannsen, Bookworm, and Richard are hit.
Dugan: blood .. there's blood everywhere!
Ranger Richard: wow thsi may be quick night!
Dhu (Dugan): shouldn't we have one more dot on the screen?
Dugan: one ... two... three... four ...
Dugan: five... ...umm... what comes after five?
Bookworm gets shot in the head. Since he is dead immediately, Corpsman McConnall checks on Johannsen and reports that he is dead also. Richard was just grazed.
Dugan: Is this close range?
"Bookworm": Aw suck. I liked being in this campaign.
Johannsen: Alas, player characters, I knew them not.
Dugan: no...! though they were but a figment of my imagination.... I shall miss them in this quest and the next
GM: The enemy is at medium range and in cover. Each square counts at 6 for purposes of range and movement.
Ranger Richard: poor red shirts!
Dugan
Alberts: Shooting [1d8 = 10]
Alberts: M16 (24/48/96) damage [2d6 = 12]
Alberts: Ah-ha! I killed one!
TADM: Dugan's turn.
Dugan: Shoots at a VC
Dugan: Shooting (M1 Carbine(Trade) +1, Medium Range -2, 3 Round Burst +2) [1d6+1 = 6]
GM: That is a hit. (You forgot the -2 for cover, but still good enough to hit.)
Dugan: M1 Carbine(Trade) damage [2d6-1 = 2]
Dugan: bummer
Sergeant Donegal: Dammit boy! Load real bullets next time!
Randall Breckenridge
Randall Breckenridge: Shooting [1d8 = 6]

GM: Your shot grazes a VC.
Ranger Richard
McConnall: (was busy checking on Johannsen)
Ranger Richard: ok
TADM: I forgot something....
GM: Jade Golem: Vigor [1d6 = 11]
Richard was not actually hit by the bullet. It turns out that there was a green flash of light, like a camera flash, and the sound of the bullet ricocheting off his canteen.
Ranger Richard: Guts (Double Tap +1, Double Tap +1, Double Tap +1, Cover (Light) -1, Cover (Light) -1, Cover (Light) -1) [1d4 = 2]

Withers: M16 (24/48/96) damage [2d6 = 10]
Dugan: Let's just line up behind richard!
John (Randall Breckenridge): can we use him for heavy cover?
Donegal injures a VC. Withers outright kills an enemy.
Hogpile lays down suppressing fire on the cluster in the northeast corner.
NVA Regular: Spirit [1] [1d8 = 6]
NVA Regular: Spirit [2] [1d8 = 1]
NVA Regular: Spirit [3] [1d8 = 5]

Killing two of them.
"Hogpile": Woohoo!
Round 2
Dealing cards...
[w] Dugan: don't forget i'm quick :)
GM: Wow, the Viet Cong are all about the high initiative tonight. Second King in a row for them.
[w] -> Dugan: Yeah, it works on cards 2-5. Last round you had a 6, this round a 7. But thanks for the reminder. :)
NVA Regular: Shooting [1] [1d8 = 6]
NVA Regular: Shooting [2] [1d8 = 4]

NVA Regular: AK-47 damage [2d8+1 = 23]
There is another spray of gunfire from the VC. Amazingly they only hit once. Unfortunately that poor SOB got hit with an AK-47 shot for 23 damage.
Sergeant Donegal: Damn young pukes. Knew they'd be the death of me!
McConnall: SARGE!
Ranger Richard: bugle call
Dugan: isn't smiling ... really
Sergeant Donegal: Can we pretend I'm in Les Miserables and so I can sing for the next fifteen minutes?
GM: No, but you can hum quietly.
Corporal Withers: Shooting [1] [1d8 = 4]
Hogpile: Shooting [2] [1d8 = 5]

Corporal Withers: M16 (24/48/96) damage [2d6 = 37]
Hogpile: M60 (30/60/120) damage [2d8+1 = 27]
Hogpile: M60 (30/60/120) damage [2d8+1 = 18]
GM: Hmm...evidently killing the sergeant resulted in berserker death rolls by the other NPCs.
GM: Withers hits a VC for 37 damage. With his M16. Rolling 2D6.
Randall Breckenridge: yay!
GM: Hogpile hits two VC. One for 27 damage. The second for 18 damage. He's rolling 2d8+1.
Ranger Richard: Nice hit
"Hogpile": Hey, anyone else notice this VC explode into chunky kibble?
Dugan
Dugan: kibbles .. and bits!
Dugan: I'll shoot
Dugan: Shooting (3 Round Burst +2, M1 Carbine(Trade) +1, Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2) [1d10-1 = 8]
Dugan: M1 Carbine(Trade) damage [2d6-1 = 5]
Dugan forces a VC to take cover.
Dugan: does 3 rd burst do the same damage as a single bullet?
GM: Dugan, you need to get the "No Mercy" Edge.
Ranger Richard: I thought it was +2 dmg as well as to hit
Ranger Richard
Ranger Richard: Shooting: M16 (Trademark) (Medium Range -2, Cover (Medium) -2, Trademark Weapon +1, Double Tap +1) [1d8-2 = 11]
GM: Gesundheit.
Ranger Richard: M16 (Trademark) damage [Raise] [3d8 = 14]
Ranger Richard: at number 10 upper left :)
John (Randall Breckenridge): apparently we need to lose more sergeants...
Richard kills a VC. Very definitively.
Ranger Richard: well theer goes all my good rolls for the night!
Randall Breckenridge
Randall Breckenridge: Shooting (Aim +2, Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2) [1d6-2 = 3]
GM: That is a miss.
Round 3
Dealing cards...
NVA Regular was dealt the Red Joker! Go whenever you want this round. You also get: Joker Trait/Damage Bonus [2]
The deck has been shuffled.
TADM: Oh CRAP!
TADM: It is never good when the NPC Mooks get a joker.
Randall Breckenridge: ow.
[w] -> Dugan: You got a Jack this turn. So no "Quick" bonus yet.
Ranger Richard: im going prone and taking cover this round, lol
[w] Dugan: thanks for the update boss
GM: Fortunately only 6 of them can shoot.
Dugan: you should aim while you are at it Richard
NVA Regular: Shooting [1] [1d8 = 6]
NVA Regular: Shooting [2] [1d8 = 8]
NVA Regular: Shooting [3] [1d8 = 9]
NVA Regular: Shooting [4] [1d8 = 8]
NVA Regular: Shooting [5] [1d8 = 6]
NVA Regular: Shooting [6] [1d8 = 5]
GM: Unfortunately, 3 of them hit.
NVA Regular: AK-47 damage [2d8+3 = 6]
NVA Regular: AK-47 damage [2d8+3 = 27]
NVA Regular: AK-47 damage [2d8+3 = 12]
TADM: Umm...mommy...
Ranger Richard: hopefully more green flashes of light!
Ranger Richard: medic
Dugan: why ... why! .... they were to young to die!
GM: Almareth's Squad: Spirit [1d8 = 20]
Withers is hit but the bullet grazes off his helmet, leaving him stunned.
Randall is hit, shaken, and takes a wound.
Randall Breckenridge is using a benny
Randall Breckenridge: Vigor [Critical failure!] [1d6 = 1]
Randall Breckenridge is using a benny
Randall Breckenridge: Vigor [1d6 = 4]
And last, but not least. Dugan needs to spend a benny.
TADM: No really. This is one of those "you need an awesome Vigor check or your dead" situations.
TADM: Dugan was tagged for six wounds from one bullet.
TADM: I'm going to assume he was blown up by a mortar shell. Or maybe a small tactical nuke....
Ranger Richard: ouch!
Dugan is using a benny
Ranger Richard: Id say the Preadtor Monster jumped on him and fireblasted his skull!
TADM: Cross-fingers.
Dugan: Vigor (3 Round Burst +2, M1 Carbine(Trade) +1, Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2) [1d6-1 = 3]
TADM: Want to try again, or accept that result?
Dugan is using a benny
TADM: (I'd go for the second benny.)
Dugan: Vigor [1d6 = 4]
[w] Dugan: is this where i try again?
[w] -> Dugan: Well, ideally you need above an 8 on a D6. Although by spending a benny and getting a 4+ you aren't going to die.
[w] Dugan: i are confused
Ranger Richard: we need some thumpers in this battle
Randall Breckenridge: hogpile has done some thumpin
Ranger Richard: Ill say
Ranger Richard: but even better when Nessies M79 adds to body count w/ Hogpile!
[w] Dugan: what die am i rolling for the incapacitation?
Randall Breckenridge: yes
[w] -> Dugan: Vigor check followed by a 2d6.
Dugan is using a benny
Dugan: Vigor [1d6 = 4]
Ranger Richard: Dugan you still with us?
GM: It's doesn't help that the other Thumper was Bookworm and he died in the first round.
Dugan: doesn't look like for much longer
GM: Okay Dugan, roll Vigor.
Dugan: Vigor [1d6 = 11]
GM: Then roll 2d6.
Dugan: [2d6 = 7]
TADM: BTW. 11 was exactly what you needed to roll to live.
John (Randall Breckenridge): he did it without a statue. woo!
Dugan gets hit in the chest, flies backwards a few feet, rolls to a halt and lies motionless for a couple seconds. Then he rises to a kneeling position, wheezing uncomfortably.
Dugan: medic!
GM: Dugan has a -3 Wound penalty to all rolls until he gets proper medical attention, but suffers NO permanent injuries and is not dead.
TADM: If Drenski was here, he might start worshipping Dugan.
Dugan
Randall Breckenridge: Ironman! Or was that your pocket flask over your heart?
GM: You can act normally, but you have a -3 penalty to any dice rolls.
Dugan: Fine I'll shoot the nearest bastards
Ranger Richard: titanium dog tags-must be from same mold as mine!
Ranger Richard: I got hit in my dog tag about two weeks ago!
Dugan: Shooting (wounds -3, Medium Range -2, 3 Round Burst +2, M1 Carbine(Trade) +1) [1d10-2 = 7]
Ranger Richard: wow
GM: You hit.
Ranger Richard: mow em down!
TADM: Do not shoot Mongo, you will only make him mad.
Dugan: M1 Carbine(Trade) damage -1 (3 Round Burst +2, wounds -3) [Raise] [3d6-2 = 7]
Ranger Richard: Remember teh Alamo!
Dugan: did i get one?
GM: Yes.
Dhu (Dugan): afk for a sec
Alberts: Umm...Dugan. I take back all those bad things I said about you. By the way, can you convert the water in my canteen into wine please?
Alberts: Shooting [1d8 = 14]
Alberts: M16 (24/48/96) damage [2d6 = 11]
Randall Breckenridge
Randall Breckenridge: Shooting (Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2, Aim +2) [1d6-2 = 5]
GM: That hits.
Randall Breckenridge: M14 damage [2d8+1 = 18]
GM: And that kills one rather gruesomely.
Dhu (Dugan): back
McConnall: Move over to Dugan and make a Heal check.
McConnall: Healing [1d6 = 5]
McConnall manages to heal a wound on Dugan by giving him a nice shot of morphine.
Dugan: woo hoo! I'm feeling better already
Dugan: weeee!
Corporal Withers: Shooting [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d8 = 1]
Hogpile: Shooting [1d8 = 13]
Hogpile: Shooting [1d8 = 2]
Hogpile: M60 (30/60/120) damage [2d8+1 = 12]
Withers misses, but Hogpile mows down another one.
Ranger Richard
Ranger Richard: shooting at vc 4
Ranger Richard: Shooting: M16 (Trademark) (Double Tap +1, Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2, Trademark Weapon +1) [1d8-2 = 3]
Ranger Richard: oh well
GM: That is a miss.
Dhu (Dugan): hey look .. the vc have numbers
Round 4
Dealing cards...
Dugan
Alberts: Shooting [1d8 = 6]
Dugan: shooting at #4 ..
Alberts shoots one and makes him take cover.
Dugan: Shooting (wounds -3, Medium Range -2, 3 Round Burst +2, M1 Carbine(Trade) +1, Cover (Medium) -2) [1d10-4 = 4]
GM: That is a hit.
Dugan: M1 Carbine(Trade) damage -1 (3 Round Burst +2, wounds -3) [Raise] [3d6-2 = 7]
Dugan: don't piss me off
Corporal Withers: Shooting [1d8 = 12]
Hogpile: Shooting [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d8 = 1]
"Hogpile": Well suck. The M60 has overheated.
Withers kills one. Hogpile's M60 begins hissing as it overheats. He stops firing and pours water from his canteen on the barrel.
"Hogpile": Not the best fix there. Alberts, you have the spare barrel?
Alberts: It was on sarge, someone grab it.
Randall Breckenridge
Randall Breckenridge: Shooting (Aim +2, Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2) [1d8-2 = 3]
Randall Breckenridge: oh well
McConnall: (technically still "healing" Dugan, since it is a multi-round action because I do not have Colwyn's snazzy Edge.)
Ranger Richard
Ranger Richard: move 1 shoot at 7
Ranger Richard: Shooting: M16 (Trademark) (Cover (Medium) -2, Double Tap +1, Trademark Weapon +1, Cover (Medium) -2) [1d8-2 = 19]
Dugan: You keep patchin doc ... I'll write yer name on the next bullets
GM: Gesundheit!
Ranger Richard: M16 (Trademark) damage [2d8 = 21]
Ranger Richard: :)
Ranger Richard: lucky 7
Ranger Richard: or unluck vc7!
He explodes. You must have triggered the grenade at his belt or something.
Dugan: nice shootin tex!
The last VC in the immediate area starts running deeper into the jungle.
Dugan
Round 5
Dealing cards...
Dugan was dealt the Red Joker! Go whenever you want this round. You also get: Joker Trait/Damage Bonus [2]
The deck has been shuffled.
Dugan
Randall Breckenridge: wow
Dugan: come on lucky 11
Dugan: Shooting (3 Round Burst +2, M1 Carbine(Trade) +1, Cover (Medium) -2, Medium Range -2, wounds -3, Aim +2) [1d10-2 = 2]
Dugan: doh!
Dhu (Dugan): does that give me a plus 2
Alberts: Shooting [1d8+2 = 8]
Dhu (Dugan): for the joker?
Dhu (Dugan): which hits?
Dhu (Dugan): all ooc of course
GM: You have a +2 Aim in there, which I assume was a misclick on that instead of the +2 Joker.
GM: So -7 in penalties +5 in bonuses = -2. which sadly misses.
Dhu (Dugan): no .. i tried to sneak on by you .. i also have a -3 wounds which should have been a -2
GM: Sure. You can hit. Alberts hit on your initiative, so roll damage. The GM shall fudge it so Alberts misses and you hit.
Alberts: I'd object, but Dugan is bulletproof...so hey, sounds good to me.
Dugan: M1 Carbine(Trade) damage -1 (wounds -2, 3 Rd Burst - Damage +2, Joker +2) [Raise] [3d6+1 = 10]
GM: And that VC falls over dead.
Dugan: that one was fer you doc
TADM: For the record, the -2 Wounds penalty does not apply to Ranged Damage rolls.
Dhu (Dugan): excellent
TADM: Or any Wounds penalty for that matter.
Dhu (Dugan): even better
Dugan: sits down ...
Dugan: catches breath
McConnall: Continues to patch Dugan.
The firefight in the immediate area subsides. It looks like the VC have pulled back.
This respite only lasts a couple minutes, long enough for people to gather and check the wounded. Then salvoes of mortars pour down on the LZ.
Corporal Withers: Move it people! Head to the listening post bunker and take cover by it until reinforcements show up.
Ranger Richard: moves up
Dugan: heads for cover
Everyone runs over to the listening post bunker and looks for cover.
Dugan: reloads
Alberts: I am going to break out my entrenching tool and start digging a nice hole to hide in.
Ranger Richard: Cool I would like to raise my two low skills guts and throwing
Ranger Richard: can i increase dice myself or does the TADM?
Dugan: i gots one bennies ... two bennies ... three bennies ... hahahahahaaaaa
TADM: You can increase them, but I already did.
Ranger Richard: cool hands of quicknss! Thanks
Ranger Richard: have great week thanks for playing!
Dugan: enjoyed it !
Dugan: Thinking about taking Brawny
Campaign saved.
