Corbin Phoenix: Yarr
Ranger Richard: This chat piece is just how my day has been going!
GM: I know your pain. Last Wednesday really sucked for me.
Corbin Phoenix: Fighting [1d4 = 11]
GM: Woohoo! The gangs all here!
Corbin Phoenix: *cough cough*
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): was that role for fighting the flu
Corbin Phoenix: Vigor [1d6 = 3]
Corbin Phoenix: That was for fighting the flu... I failed.
Corbin Phoenix: Vigor [1d6 = 7]
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): your going to die but that is okay...
Corbin Phoenix: Whew... I recovered.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Vigor [1d4 = 2]
Tyran Drenski: Vigor [1d4 = 3]
Tyran Drenski: Smarts [1d8 = 3]
Ranger Richard: Vigor [1d6 = 3]
It is time for morning chow. The squad all gathers, minus Sarge, who is again off missing somewhere.
This seems to be an accepted norm, which does strike the newbies as a bit unusual.
Corporal Withers: Morning all, time for another fun breakfast of mystery eggs with who-knows-what-meat.
Corbin Phoenix: Spirit [1d4 = 3]
Corbin Phoenix: I can't bring myself to eat breakfast.
Johannsen: Hey guys, nice to meet you all. I just came back from R&R, missed the last couple ops.
Johannsen: Sounds like I missed some fun.
Ranger Richard: welcome johannsen whats your spcialty?
Johannsen: I'm a rifleman and heavy equipment hauler.
Tyran Drenski: I just found out these eggs started as powder...I hate KP
Colwyn O'Reilly: so does the meat, tyran
Hogpile: Yeah, doc (points at Colwyn) brought me back from the dead. One week later I'm back and ready for action. With a shiny purple heart to show for it.
Colwyn O'Reilly nods
Tyran Drenski: powdered meat is there no hope for good food in this place
Colwyn O'Reilly: he wasn't quite dead
Alberts: No chance for decent food at all whiny.
Hogpile: I'm not dead yet!
GM: Hogpile, that movie has not been released yet. No anachronistic Monty Python lines from the NPCs please.
Hogpile: Sigh. Why do the PCs get to have all the fun?
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): npcs don't have one liners
Bookworm: Subject appears to have suffered from brain damage during his near death experience.
Tyran Drenski: Hogpile is alive but losing it...
Bookworm: Oh hey, Corbin, did you get to see the giant spider web things? Those were cool. Tyran grabbed a sample, but some guys from SIG snatched it.
Corbin Phoenix: I saw them from a distance... never got a close up look at them.
Tyran Drenski: They took it? i'm not getting you a new one.
For anyone paying attention to such things, it is currently September 10th, 1965.
Ranger Richard: the date helsp- I always buy clothes and sit here in the right clothing to get into the gaming realism dont you guys?
TADM: Good thing bellbottoms are back in style.
Valeroth (Corbin Phoenix): heh
Johannsen: Guys, did mail show up while I was out? Keep hoping I get a care package from the folks back home. You know, something with cookies in it.
Alberts: You realize if it showed up, no one would claim it did, right? Man your momma makes great cookies.
Tyran Drenski: I didn't see it, so I didn't eat it.
Sergeant Almareth walks into the tent.
Sergeant Almareth: Morning all, orders have come down.
Sergeant Almareth: But finish your exciting chow first.
Tyran Drenski: Exciting is what it is not, Serg.
Corbin Phoenix: morning sarge
Sergeant Almareth: Good to see you back Phoenix and Johannsen.
Hogpile: You want some chow sarge?
Sergeant Almareth: No, I stopped over at the restaurant outside town and had some chow there.
Colwyn O'Reilly: mornin' sarge
Bookworm: That place? The food is impossibly spicy, how can you eat it?
Sergeant Almareth: (shrugs)
Tyran Drenski grubles about real food
Breakfast passes uneventfully. No one has to make any rolls for Fatigue levels from bad food.
TADM: Yet.
Sergeant Almareth: This one is a quick trip folks. Eight hour hike.
Colwyn O'Reilly: what's the weather like?
Corbin Phoenix: What all should we bring with us?
Colwyn O'Reilly: and should we take some chickens in case of AOUS's?
Tyran Drenski: Or bug spray?
Sergeant Almareth: No need to pack extra rations, things like that. Make sure you bring ponchos, dry socks, canteens, and wet weather gear. Forecast today is 95% chance of rain and 100% chance of high humidity.
Ranger Richard: this way we can pre-wire chickens
Sergeant Almareth: I doubt we need chickens. But just in case everyone bring a few grenades.
Ranger Richard: always good to bring 1 extra day of rations and water when they say quick trip-8 hours equals overnight stay!
Corbin Phoenix: Hmm, yeah think your right. Guess I'm brining everything.
Corbin Phoenix: When we heading out sarge?
Corporal Withers: Corbin, you feeling healthy enough to haul the PRC-25 or you want someone else to lug it for you?
Tyran Drenski nods
Corbin Phoenix: I'll start out with it anyway.
Johannsen: I can haul it if he has trouble. (looks at Corbin) Just let me know.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): i'm surprised we don't have enough extra socks to cause even more encumberance
Sergeant Almareth: Right grab your gear, we are meeting over at the heli-pad in 45 minutes. They are flying us out to a village, we chat with the locals, patrol out to an abandoned French monastery, head back to the village, choppers come and pick us up.
Johannsen: Hooah sarge
Corbin Phoenix heads out to go get his gear.
Tyran Drenski: We'll get the brief in route then, serg
Sergeant Almareth: More specific than the one I gave you? Yes.
Sergeant Almareth: (heads out of the tent)
Colwyn O'Reilly: yes sarge
Colwyn O'Reilly heads to pack up gear
Colwyn O'Reilly: what's the name of the village, sarge?
Tyran Drenski Heads out to his rack checks, and gathers all his stuff and heads to the bird.
Corbin Phoenix: heads out to the heli-pad.
About 40 minutes later, everyone gathers at the Heli-pad. You climb into a chopper and it heads north.
Sergeant Almareth: The village we are headed to is here (points to a village on Corbin's map)
Sergeant Almareth: Following the battle last week, there have been no enemy sightings in the area.
Sergeant Almareth: HQ wants us to do a presence patrol along the river here (points to a river that passes by the village)
Sergeant Almareth: We are to head up to this abandoned French monastery, scout it for any VC presence. Then turn around, head back to ths village along the same route. The choppers come pick us up and we are back at base in time for dinner.
Corbin Phoenix: sounds good.
Tyran Drenski: hooah serg
Corporal Withers: Sounds too easy.
Tyran Drenski: Hooah withers thinking the same thing.
Ranger Richard: ok
Sergeant Almareth: I agree. Which is why we need to pay attention and keep a sharp eye out for traps.
Colwyn O'Reilly: did they put hallucinegenics in the chow again?
Bookworm: Hey sarge, the village we are landing in, from what I remember they were not all that friendly to Americans last time we came through.
Sergeant Almareth: If they did, let me know Colwyn. I don't eat the mess tent stuff.
Corporal Withers: Bookworm's right. That village was downright unfriendly last time we were there. Didn't attack or anything, but they were definitely happy to see us gone.
Ranger Richard: is this same village next to webs?
Hogpile: I'm guessing we can't shoot first and ask questions later?
GM: No it is not Richard. It is about 30 klicks northeast of that village.
Colwyn O'Reilly: maybe we should take some beer? that makes people happy.
Tyran Drenski: I like Hogpile's iea
Corporal Withers: No, to both of you. (looks crossly at Tyran and Hogpile)
Corporal Withers: But I like Colwyn's thinking.
Sergeant Almareth: When the chopper touches down, everyone look sharp. Take cover and stay low until we can assess the situation. No sense dying getting off a chopper. The LZ is supposed to be friendly...notice the use of the word "supposed."
Tyran Drenski: Nice looking lady's and beer might work.
Alberts: Hooah sarge
Tyran Drenski: Hooah serg
Colwyn O'Reilly: yessarge
Ranger Richard: all set
Corbin Phoenix: ready
The Chopper flight is uneventful. The pilot brings the chopper in for a nice dustoff on the outskirts of a small village.
Corbin Phoenix slings his pack on, and draws his pistol as we approach the LZ
It consists of about 20 huts, and probably has a population of 75.
Most of the population is working out in the fields, they look up at the helicopter, then return to their work.
Colwyn O'Reilly readies his rifle to provide covering fire
Tyran Drenski Follows the serg with all gear, keeping an eye out.
The NPCs hop out of the Chopper and crouch low, scanning the area for signs of trouble.
Corbin Phoenix hops out and stays low searching the area.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): DFA's all the civilians just because they might be VC
Tyran Drenski: Tyran is low and bee lines for near by rock for cover.
Sergeant Almareth: Withers, take Bookworm, Hogpile, Alberts, and Johannsen and do a perimeter sweep. I will take Phoenix, Drenski, Richard, and O'Reilly into the village.
Colwyn O'Reilly: yessarge
Corporal Withers: (makes hand signals for the soldiers to follow him)
Tyran Drenski: hooah
Corbin Phoenix falls in behind the sarge.
The Corporal and half the squad head out, scouting the perimeter for activity.
As Sarge and the four of you enter the vilage, an elderly villager comes over and begins talking in Vietnamese.
Village Headman: (speaking quickly in Vietnamese)
Sergeant Almareth: (speaks quickly back in Vietnamese)
This goes on for a couple minutes, then Sarge nods.
Tyran Drenski looks around
Colwyn O'Reilly looks around for opportunities to improve relations by giving medical care
GM: Any actions to perform while Sarge is talking?
GM: Notice checks/etc?
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d4 = 2]
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [1d4 = 7]
Corbin Phoenix: I scan the area for anything suspicious.
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d4 = 3]
GM: In Colwyn's professional opinion, the people in this village look healthy.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): I'm a blond trying to notice...
No one sees anything out of the ordinary.
Ranger Richard: keeps eye on anything suspicious in village
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d6 = 4]
Tyran Drenski: I'm looking don't want any surprises.
TADM: I just realized that Richard gets a +4 to Vigor checks against the Vietnamese climate. Nice.
Sergeant Almareth: Colwyn, the old man here told me that they have two young boys who are very ill.
Sergeant Almareth: According to him, they were playing down by the river a couple days ago. When they did not come back for dinner, the parents went out to look for them and found them unconscious by the river.
Colwyn O'Reilly: do i have time to take a look sarge?
Sergeant Almareth: They had not fallen in, but they are sick and feverish. Supposedly nothing they try will help the kids out.
Sergeant Almareth: You do. If we can help the kids maybe these villagers will be a little more receptive to us in the future.
Colwyn O'Reilly: my thoughts as well
Tyran Drenski: No pressure Colwyn.
Colwyn O'Reilly: can you come along to translate sarge?
Sergeant Almareth: Corbin hop on the PRC-25 and tell them we are stopping to assist the villagers. Our patrol will be delayed going out by an hour.
Corbin Phoenix: will do sarge.
Corbin Phoenix transmits the above back to base.
Village Headman: (gestures for soldiers to follow him)
Colwyn O'Reilly follows almareth
Sergeant Almareth: Keep your weapons at the ready, just in case they have a load of VC sitting inside a hut waiting to shoot us.
Corbin Phoenix stows his radio and draws his pistol back out.
Corbin Phoenix: Okay sarge, our pickup will be one hour later now.
Sergeant Almareth: Richard, keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
Sergeant Almareth: Thanks Phoenix.
Village Headman: (gestures for the soldiers to enter a hut, he walks in ahead of you)
Sergeant Almareth: I'll go in first. (ducks inside the hut)
Tyran Drenski stays on the outside of the hut by the door. Kepping a look out.
Sergeant Almareth: All clear, you can come in Colwyn. Richard and Drenski keep an eye out for trouble.
Colwyn O'Reilly heads in
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): sorry I can't spell or type tonight.
Corbin Phoenix: emote heads in.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Healing {+2 Healer} [1d6+2 = 5]
Ranger Richard: scanning area
Tyran Drenski scans with weapon at the ready.
Inside the tent is the headman, a young Vietnamese woman, and two children (probably about 6 years old) lying on straw pallets. They are feverish, sweating, and twitching in their sleep.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): lays on hands
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): or maybe cure disease?
The headman and the woman seem very concerned about the children. The woman continuously dabs their heads with a damp cloth and says things to them in Vietnamese.
Colwyn O'Reilly: sarge, i'd like to check them for any animal bites, if that's alright with them
[w] -> Colwyn O'Reilly: O'Reilly With that heal check you are able to find the source of the problem. The kids have both been bitten by some sort of very large insect.
[w] Colwyn O'Reilly: yeah, like that
Sergeant Almareth: By all means.
Colwyn O'Reilly: sarge... looks like some kind of animal bite... probably insect
Sergeant Almareth: Interesting.
Colwyn O'Reilly: i can give them some drugs to make them a little better for now, but they'll probably need some longer term care
Sergeant Almareth: (speaks Vietnamese to the headman)
Village Headman: (responds)
Sergeant Almareth: They'd appreciate any help you can give.
[w] -> Ranger Richard: Richard Make a notice check please
Colwyn O'Reilly: yes, sarge... i've got a couple things here in my pack.
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix Make a common knowledge roll please
[w] Colwyn O'Reilly: i'm giving them benadryl and aspirin
Ranger Richard: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 3]
Ranger Richard: ugh
[w] Corbin Phoenix: Is that a Smarts roll?
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d6 = 5]
[w] -> Ranger Richard: Richard You see nothing unusual.
[w] Corbin Phoenix: that's how we do it in my other campaign... i think.
[w] Colwyn O'Reilly: i looked up those drugs, and I would probably have access to them
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): better than a three yea
[w] Colwyn O'Reilly: and probably a bag of fluids each
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix Yep, Smarts check
Corbin Phoenix: Smarts [1d6 = 3]
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): All i can roll tonight is three
Valeroth (Corbin Phoenix): Yeah same here.
[w] -> Colwyn O'Reilly: O'Reilly Yep, subtract 2 "uses" from your medkit.
[w] -> Colwyn O'Reilly: O'Reilly And make a heal check.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Healing {+2 Healer} [1d6+2 = 6]
[w] -> Colwyn O'Reilly: O'Reilly Nicely done.
Colwyn O'Reilly: that's about all i can do with what I have sarge
About twenty minutes later, Colwyn rises and smiles. Based on his medical opinion the kids are much better off now and will probably live through this.
Colwyn O'Reilly: they'll need water once those bags are gone, i can show the leader how to take out the ivs
Sergeant Almareth: Well done. We'll check on them again before we head back to base tonight.
Colwyn O'Reilly: yes sarge
[w] -> Colwyn O'Reilly: O'Reilly You needed a 6 on that roll.
[w] Tyran Drenski: did we notice anything?
[w] -> Colwyn O'Reilly: O'Reilly Yay for the Healer Edge!
[w] -> Tyran Drenski: Drenski Nope.
[w] Colwyn O'Reilly: it comes through again woot
[w] Tyran Drenski: damn the luck got a five and it's no good.:)
[w] -> Tyran Drenski: Drenski Well, you were successful, there was just nothing to see.
Corbin Phoenix: Shooting: Colt 1911 [1d4 = 3]
Valeroth (Corbin Phoenix): whoops
Colwyn O'Reilly hits the deck
Sergeant Almareth: Okay, let's head down the river and see what is around here.
[w] Tyran Drenski: I know just wasted by good role for the night lol
Ranger Richard: hopefully we didnt just shoot the kid to make him bettter:)
Valeroth (Corbin Phoenix): just accidently clicked on the wrong place in the sheet.
Withers and the rest of the squad shows up.
Corporal Withers: Nothing unusual to see around here sarge. Pretty quiet.
Tyran Drenski: That is intense healing
Colwyn O'Reilly follows squad
The squad spreads out and heads down hill to a swiftly flowing river.
Tyran Drenski looks around and follows.
GM: I am going to assume you are being attentive and watchful and have weapons at the ready. If you are doing anything special, or looking for anything in particular, let me know.
Corbin Phoenix is being attentive and watchful and has his weapon at the ready.
Ranger Richard: I had a medic once who had accidental discharge while conducting a link up and he stated he checked to see if his rifle was on safe by pulling trigger!
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): wow
TADM: Cute.
Ranger Richard: how would you like him patching you up if wounded-gee I just shot him with his pam 2 injector to see if it actually worked
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix Smarts check again.
Corbin Phoenix: Smarts [1d8 = 9]
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): I would tell him to put the gun down first
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix Just as you reach the river the PRC-25 gives off a loud burst of static. You swear you hear a voice talking, but cannot make out a single word. The PRC-25 then goes eerily quiet.
Ranger Richard: ame medic who told my platoon sergeant to not talk to him so rudely when he gave him directives of where to load onto an apc at night...
Corbin Phoenix: shhh....
Corbin Phoenix: wait one sec.
Corbin Phoenix crouches down and pulls out the receiver for his PRC
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): Some Medics are smart. I knew one who stuck his arm in a fire ant hill for five bucks. He was in ICU for a month.
Corbin Phoenix (whisper): I think I heard something on the PRC
Ranger Richard: scann trees for spiders jumping down on us.
Tyran Drenski crouches in cover
Corbin Phoenix tries listening and adjusting hte frequency slightly in either direction.
Colwyn O'Reilly scan ground level for VCs that will actually attack us
Tyran Drenski listens for sounds looks are trees for movement.
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix The PRC-25 seems completely dead. The batteries look fine, but you are picking up no static or traffic on it at all.
GM: Okay, everyone looking for spiders or VC, make notice checks.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [1d6 = 17]
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d6 = 3]
Corbin Phoenix (whisper): I fiddle with the PRC to see if I can see wha tis wrong with it.
Corbin Phoenix: Repair [1d6 = 7]
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 6]
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): I'm back to threes again. lol
Everyone is absolutely certain there are no giant spiders or VC around. In fact, Colwyn's convinced there are not even current tracks of anyone other than barefooted villagers.
Ranger Richard: still btter than ones :)
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): very true
Corbin works on the PRC-25 for thirty seconds, and suddenly it comes "back to life." He starts getting static and hearing radio chatter again.
Corbin Phoenix something is up... I couldn't get any signal for a moment.
Corbin Phoenix (whisper): Not sure if someone is trying to jam us or what.
Corbin Phoenix (whisper): Sarge, should I try to contact base? Or should we continue on?
Corbin Phoenix (whisper): Can I make out any of the chatter?
Tyran Drenski: (whispers) Sounds like a trap to me.
The chatter is pretty normal. Nothing unusual. No one makes any mention of the sudden interrruption in radio chatter.
Corbin Phoenix: I guess we should keep goiong... I'll keep a close listen to the PRC to see if it happens again.
Sergeant Almareth: Let's keep moving, listen in Corbin and let me know if you hear anything strange.
Sergeant Almareth: Nice Phoenix, reading my mind....
Ranger Richard: Can i make notice check to see if GM was just doinga notice roll so we dont think something is going to happen every time he asks?
Corbin Phoenix: Okay I'm going to be paying more attention ot the radio than to where we are... so someone keep an eye on me and make sure I don't ste on any land mines or anything.
TADM: Sure Richard.
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 14]
Ranger Richard: dang think I just wasted my best roll of night!
TADM: Based on that awesome notice check, Richard is firmly convinced the GM is some sort of conniving vile plotter who prefers to keep his players guessing.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): lol
Ranger Richard: lol
Johannsen: I'll keep an eye out for you Corbin. Don't want our radioman getting hurt if we need fire support or rapid evac.
Ranger Richard: you bet and have to carry that radio if he falls out!
[w] Corbin Phoenix: I keep one ear to the radio... trying to pick up anything unusuall.
About twenty minutes later, a torrential downpour begins. Fortunately the jungle canopy here is dense enough that you do not get that wet. You also have plenty of time to drape ponchos over things you want to keep dry.
Ranger Richard: awesome
Ranger Richard: keeps the bugs away for a little awhile.
Corbin Phoenix: I work the radio up into the hood of my poncho and keep it pressed to my ear.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): i think i left my car windows open
Ranger Richard: do villagers stay out or back to huts?
Aside from occasional status reports (in code) there is nothing unsual to hear.
At this point, given the density of the underbrush, you cannot see the village or the villagers.
You slog through the jungle for two hours. Then the rain stops. It gets really humid quickly. Thousands of insects arise, swarming around the squad and making your lives miserable.
Corbin Phoenix: I leave my poncho on.
Sergeant Almareth: Water break. Weather like this it is really easy to get dehydrated.
Tyran Drenski sprays more unscented bug spray on and leave the poncho on too
Ranger Richard: omg wet poncho in humidity bad memories!
Colwyn O'Reilly changes socks
Corbin Phoenix changes socks.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): bad memories for me too
Tyran Drenski joins in the sock changing group
GM: Everyone make a vigor check.
Corbin Phoenix: Vigor [1d6 = 4]
Ranger Richard: change socks as turn comes
Colwyn O'Reilly: Vigor [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 3]
Tyran Drenski: Vigor [1d4 = 3]
Tyran Drenski: Vigor [1d6 = 7]
Ranger Richard: Vigor [1d6 = 2]
Colwyn O'Reilly: Vigor [Trait roll was a natural 1] [3]
Ranger Richard: but I think it was +4 I have
GM: Some of you are fatigued by the weather.
TADM: Yeah, almost forgot your +4 Richard, you are fine.
Sergeant Almareth: Let's keep moving.
Tyran Drenski: Hooah serg
You slog through the mud now for another couple hours.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): no nap time?
It is another glorious day in the army.
Four hours into your walk, you come to what must have once been a very nice church.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): and they were forced to eat robin's minstrels... yay
Corbin Phoenix: How old does the church look?
There are dozens of abandoned huts near it. Everything looks like it has been abandoned for at least fifty years. The jungle has reclaimed most of the settlement.
Tyran Drenski looks for any signs of people
Tyran Drenski: jungle ghost town
Colwyn O'Reilly looks for any sign of current habitation
You would guess the church is a hundred years old or so. There is some very faded French written on the church walls.
GM: Notice checks.
Corbin Phoenix: Anyone speak French?
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d6 = 8]
Colwyn O'Reilly: like grafitti? or nicely written?
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d4 = 11]
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6-1 = 7]
Valeroth (Corbin Phoenix): Whoohoo.. a rasie!
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): woo! a raise with a natural 1!
GM: To answer Colwyn's question, a combination of both.
Colwyn O'Reilly: i know a little creole french... but it's dirty
Tyran Drenski: No french, I speak little German and russain whuch isn't helpful.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): (which)
Colwyn O'Reilly: don't know if i can make much sense of this
The squad pretty thoroughly searches the remains of the village and the outside of the church, but there are no signs of recent habitation.
Corbin Phoenix: well give a shot at least I guess
Corbin Phoenix: So sarge... why were we supposed to hike out to this old church anyway?
Colwyn O'Reilly: Smarts [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6-1 = 1]
Colwyn O'Reilly: doesn't even look like french to me
Colwyn can pick out a few things from the Church walls. Looks like it was originally built in the late 1890s.
Tyran Drenski: Wonder why this village was abandoned.
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 5]
Sergeant Almareth: Well, I guess to keep an eye out for VC and see if they have started using this area again.
The group does notice that Sarge walks very slowly around the chuch, scanning over it. You get the idea that he reads French.
Corbin Phoenix: Perhaps we should search the church and huts for any signs of tunnels? They like to hide underground right?
Corporal Withers: Good call Corbin.
Tyran Drenski: That's a good idea I'll help ya.
Colwyn O'Reilly: why would anyone need an abandoned church?
Corbin Phoenix: K, I'll go around with Tyran checking out the huts. Pistol in one hand, radio in the other.
Colwyn can make out a little of the grafitti. What he can make out he does not like. You get the feeling this church was not voluntarily abandoned.
[w] Corbin Phoenix: How many notice checks should we both make?
GM: Everyone make another Notice check.
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d4 = 3]
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 9]
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [1d4-1 = 5]
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 7]
No one finds any sign of tunnels.
Just as the squad is gathering up near the church, the PRC-25 bursts into life again. It is a sharp burst of static and some strange voices, they definitely are not speaking English.
Corbin Phoenix: I turn down the radio a bit.. so as not to give our position away.
Corbin Phoenix: I crouch down and listen... can I make out the language?
There are bursts of gunfire from across the river. Corbin, who has his hear pressed into the radio, hears them in stereo.
Colwyn O'Reilly looks around the church for signs of violence
Corbin Phoenix: Fuck!
Colwyn O'Reilly: that would be violence
Colwyn O'Reilly takes cover
Corbin Phoenix: I find cover.
Tyran Drenski: Give it to the serg he speaks everything.
Ranger Richard: how far away is gunfire/river?
Corbin Phoenix: How far is the sarge from me?
Tyran Drenski finds cover and looks out for anything in coming.
The river is about 20 yards away. The gunfire is coming from the opposite side of the river, but it is not that far onto the opposite bank.
Corbin Phoenix: is the gunfire directed at us?
Tyran Drenski: Maybe we should use the church for cover.
Ranger Richard: were their known friendlies over there?
GM: Sarge is about ten feet from Corbin, he runs over to Corbin.
Corbin Phoenix nods to Tyran.
Corbin Phoenix: Sarge... I'm picking up that gunfire through the radio... as well as some language I can't make out.
The gunfire on the opposite side of the river dies down. None of it seems to have been directed at the squad.
Sergeant Almareth: (listens for a sec)
Colwyn O'Reilly: did it sound like modern weapons? automatics?
Sergeant Almareth: Hmm...put a call into HQ and see if there are supposed to be friendlies across the river.
Tyran Drenski: I say we get in the chruch, so we are not spotted and have element of surprize.
Corbin Phoenix hands his radio reciever to sarge, pulls out his binoculours and peers accross the river... just barely sticking his head up from cover.
Corbin Phoenix: What kind of cover am I behind?
Hogpile: Not sure what is going on over there, but I ain't heard nothing fire yet that wasn't American made.
GM: Since you were not far from the church, and it has no door, you could easily dive inside the building for pretty much total cover.
Tyran Drenski: American made don't mean they are Amercian.
Corbin Phoenix: I stick to the sarge for now. Wherver he goes I'm going. I hand him the binocs real quick if he wants them, and call into HQ.
Alberts: Good point Drenski
Ranger Richard: what material is church made out of?
Tyran Drenski dives into the church and sets up near a window.
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: HQ radios back that there are no friendlies across the river. The squad is instructed to investigate. Fire support is being arranged if needed.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): heavy brick I hope
Colwyn O'Reilly assumed he was already in the church
The church seems to be made of a combination of stone and fired bricks.
Corbin Phoenix: HQ says there are no reported friendlies in our areas. We are to investigate and arrange fire support if needed.
Sergeant Almareth: Got it.
Sergeant Almareth: Withers, take Bookworm, Hogpile, Alberts and Johannsen. Setup covering fire for us as we cross the river. Everyone else come with me.
Tyran Drenski: hooah serg
Corporal Withers: Right sarge. Hogpile, you and Alberts setup the M60 and get ready to suppress the hell out of the far bank if we so much as here a pop-gun cap go off.
Ranger Richard: nice!
GM: (hear even)
Corbin Phoenix I stick about 5 feet behind the sarge in case he needs radio contact.
Tyran Drenski follows in a low crouch
There is no further gunfire as you approach the river bank.
Sarge heads into the river. He sinks up to his waist. The current is moving pretty fast.
GM: Everyone make an Agility check as you cross the river.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Agility [1d6-1 = 2]
Corbin Phoenix: Agility [1d6 = 7]
Tyran Drenski looks for bullet casings to see where the enemy was
Ranger Richard: Agility [1d6 = 7]
Tyran Drenski: Agility [1d6 = 5]
Tyran Drenski holds all his detonators above his head to keep them dry
GM: Okay, everyone makes it across the stream, except for Colwyn, who slips and has to make a swimming check.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): colwyn doesn't hav swimming
GM: Roll a D4 and a D6 and subtract 2 from both rolls. (or 3 in your case because of the Fatigue level)
Colwyn O'Reilly: [1d4 = 13]
Colwyn O'Reilly: -3
TADM: Colwyn O'Reilly = Michael Phelps dad.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): lol
Tyran Drenski looks for any sign of where the weapons were fired and direction of movement.
Corbin Phoenix tries again to pick up the foreign transmissions.
As everyone reaches the far side of the bank, there are several more bursts of gunfire. Everyone ducks for cover. Hogpile opens up with the M60 and clips the grass quite impressively near the squad. There is no more static or strange transmissions over the PRC-25. After fifteen seconds of this, the gunfire stops. Again it seems like you were not the targets.
Corbin Phoenix: What direction was it coming from?
The gunfire came from straight ahead of the group, about forty yards into the jungle.
Tyran Drenski looks around for movement up a head.
Ranger Richard: should plant a claymore or two here in case we need to fall back?
Corbin Phoenix: How far is our visibility?
Colwyn O'Reilly: does it sound like anyone is getting hit?
Tyran Drenski: i have two with me
GM: You did not hear anything that sounded like people being hit.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): does it sound like the gunfire is near by?
The jungle is pretty dense here, but looking ahead you can see a clearing in the distance. You see some mounds and other debris in the clearing.
All of you are positive that the gunfire was coming from the direction of the clearing, if not in it, then near it.
Sergeant Almareth: Stay low and stay quiet. Richard and I move up first. The other three behind. We will use bounding overwatch forward to the clearing.
GM: Any special actions, requests, etc?
Corbin Phoenix: I keep my eyes open, and try to move as quitely as possible.
Ranger Richard: all set
Colwyn O'Reilly: nothing special
Moving quietly and cautiously, it takes about fifteen minutes to cover the forty yards to the clearing.
When you reach the clearing, it is a rather unusual sight.
There is a pit dug into the ground nearby. There are numerous shovels and picks lying about. The strange mounds you spotted in the distance are mounds of dirt that have been piled up to clear the pit.
Tyran Drenski sets up a claymore just incase.
The shovels and picks are pretty lousy manufacture, not US government issue, or even anything mass manufactured. They look like individually made digging implements.
Colwyn O'Reilly: anything in the pit?
Walking over to the pit reveals slightly more interesting clues.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): the tree, in the jungle, with the shovel!
Tyran Drenski looks into the pits.
In the pit are about a dozen Vietnamese, they all look dead. There are also five GIs in there. They look dead also, they are still clutching their weapons. You will need to climb into the pit for a more thorough analysis.
Colwyn O'Reilly keeps an eye out for the pit diggers... especially if the pit looks freshly dug (since the rainstorm)
Tyran Drenski: I only heard of mass graves when people are sick.
Corbin Phoenix: stays near the tree line, scanning the opposite tree lines
The pit was definitely dug after the rainstorm. There is no water pooled in the bottom of it.
Tyran Drenski covers his face with his shirt
Ranger Richard: we need names off id tags so hq can id where our gis came from!
Colwyn O'Reilly: yes, yes we do
On one side of the pit, you see a large round stone that has fallen over. It is covered in all sorts of Christian symbols, including a very large crucifix carved into it. It looks like the stone was plugging some sort of cave entrance. You would have to crouch down to crawl inside the hole.
Tyran Drenski: doc got gloves i don't want the fever.
Colwyn O'Reilly: yeah... sarge, I'll go down
Colwyn O'Reilly: i'd like to check the bodies anyway
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): how deep is the pit?
The pit is about eight feet deep.
Tyran Drenski: I'll help you lower down into it.
As Colwyn is lowered into the pit, another burst of gunfire comes from the cave entrance in the pit. Bullets ricochet around Colwyn.
US infantryman: Damn you! Die! Die! I don't know what you are but DIE!
Corbin Phoenix: As I was at the tree line I look to see where the gunfire was coming from.
Colwyn O'Reilly: holy crap!
A grenade comes out of the cave, rolling towards Colwyn.
US infantryman: Maybe that will kill you fiends!
Colwyn O'Reilly kicks a body over onto the 'nade
Colwyn O'Reilly and takes cover behind another one
GM: Agility check Colwyn.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Agility [1d6-1 = 2]
GM: US Infantry: M26 Grenade damage [3d6 = 11]
Ranger Richard: call out cease fire friendly americans out here!
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): beings rolling new character
GM: Colwyn is the winner of the first purple heart for a PC!
Colwyn O'Reilly: crap
Colwyn O'Reilly is using a benny
Colwyn O'Reilly: Vigor [1d6 = 5]
Colwyn O'Reilly: american soldiers! cease fire!
GM: The grenade explodes, but somehow Colwyn amazingly takes no damage from it.
Tyran Drenski leans down to help colwyn out of the pit
US infantryman: NOOO! You may sound like Americans, but you look like white apes! I can see the blood on your claws from where you killed my squad! DIE!
Another burst of gunfire comes from the cave.
Colwyn O'Reilly: okay, help me out
Colwyn O'Reilly climbs out of the pit
Tyran Drenski: okay doc have any pysch skills this one is going to need it.
Corbin Phoenix: Anyone particulary good at persuasion?
Colwyn O'Reilly: maybe morphine
Colwyn O'Reilly: anyone have a flashbang?
GM: Amazingly, no one in this party has the Persuasion skill.
Tyran Drenski: I got a smoke grenade and you got a needle think it will work?
Colwyn O'Reilly: doubt it... he's got a good field of fire
Tyran Drenski: send down a decoy and run him out of ammo.
Colwyn O'Reilly: i was a decoy
[w] Corbin Phoenix: I keep my eyes on the surroundings and my ear to the radio while they are trying to talk him out of there.
Colwyn O'Reilly: that almost didn't work
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix Make a Notice check, since you are scanning the tree line.
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d4 = 3]
[w] Corbin Phoenix: I'm going to use a bennie
Tyran Drenski: not a living one, a dead body is good.
Corbin Phoenix is using a benny
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d4 = 3]
Corbin Phoenix is using a benny
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d6 = 5]
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix You SWEAR, that out of the corner of your eye, you see a huge white ape running through the trees. Think giant African gorrilla, but Albino.
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Phoenix When you turn to look at it, it is not there.
Corbin Phoenix runs out to the center where everyone else is.
Corbin Phoenix: Sarge... something big a white... looked like an ape just ran that way!
Corbin Phoenix points.
Sergeant Almareth: (looks where Corbin is pointing)
Sergeant Almareth: (sniffs)
Corbin Phoenix: I swear it was just there.
Tyran Drenski looks holding his weapon
US infantryman: DIE! Die ape things! (another grenade comes out of the pit)
Tyran Drenski: incoming
Tyran Drenski ducks for cover
The grenade will not harm anyone who is not in the pit, as long as you are not being an idiot and leaning over the pit staring at the grenade.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): no idiot here
Colwyn O'Reilly steps away from the pit
Ranger Richard: wow anybody have hypnotism skill
The grenade explodes.
GM: Notice checks everyone.
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d6 = 5]
Ranger Richard: hey buddy its Richard from such and such unti we are checking on your units status what is going on here what happened?
Tyran Drenski: (yells toward the pit he is not close too) Get a grip Solder!!
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d4-1 = 6]
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 3]
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [1d4-1 = 2]
Ranger Richard: make sure we keep an eye on perimiter so nothing sneaks up on us while we are focused on this nut!
Corbin and Tyran both see the giant white ape from the corner of their eyes again. You both look in the same direction, but when you try to focus on it directly, it vanishes from view.
Corbin Phoenix: I think we should get this soldier out of this pit and get back to the rest of the guys.
Tyran Drenski: Okay I seen that ape too. Sarge it was there (he points)
Corbin Phoenix: I try to raise the soldier on the radio... hoping what I picked up before was his radio.
Tyran Drenski: I know why he's crazy now. I bet that is why those people left that village.
US infantryman: (over the radio) Yes! Yes HQ! I am fighting the Giant Apes right now!
US infantryman: (over the radio) They wiped out my unit!
US infantryman: (over the radio) I need air support now!
Corbin Phoenix: Soldier... We've sent a squad to extract you. You should proceed with them directly to return to base!
Sergeant Almareth: Brilliant Phoenix.
Tyran Drenski: give him a code word so he's not suspicous.
US infantryman: (Over radio) No can do. There are at least five ape demons right outside. I only have 1 grenade and ten bullets left. They are not going to kill me like they did my squad.
Corbin Phoenix (whispers): well... he's only got 10 bullets left, and one grenade....
Corbin Phoenix: sarge, what would the code to be to extract?
Tyran Drenski: like a challange and password? maybe
Sergeant Almareth: Hmm...tell him Iskalachampa.
Corbin Phoenix (over radio): Soldier, those folks right outside are there to extract you. They have reported sightings of the ape and need YOUR HELP! Iskalachampa.
Tyran Drenski look into the forest in the direction he saw the ape.
Colwyn O'Reilly: so they did put something in the food
As soon as Corbin states Iskalachampa through the radio, the soldier lets out an ear-piercing shriek. He fires off the ten bullets left in his gun. The grenade rolls out and explodes. Then he rushes out with his bayonet, swinging wildly.
US infantryman: (strange guttural voice) Where did you hear that! Where? DIE hairy fleshlings!
Corbin Phoenix (over radio): Okay lets get the heck out of here.
US infantryman: (reaches for weapons from fallen GIs)
Corbin Phoenix: Quick... someone knock this guy out
Tyran Drenski: Solder we are here to bring you home. Serg sent us.
Ranger Richard: we should rush him and subdue him...
Sarge jumps into the pit and punches the soldier. He drops like a ragdoll.
Colwyn O'Reilly: i was gonna do that
Sergeant Almareth: (hoists the unconscious soldier out of the pit)
Sergeant Almareth: Tie him up with everything you have. Everything. He needs to be wrapped up like a mummy.
Tyran Drenski: Serg we don't have to keep him do we? Can Doc drug him to make sure he stays out?
Sergeant Almareth: That too. Every single sedative in your kit. Pump it in him now.
Ranger Richard: any extra ammo/grenades visible in pit? grab soldiers id cards
Sergeant Almareth: Good idea Richard, grab up the gear from the fallen.
Tyran Drenski looks out for anything coming
Sergeant Almareth: Then we need to move, and move very very fast.
Colwyn O'Reilly: any chance of getting extracted from here?
Tyran Drenski: ETA to be at the LZ Serg? Should we let them know of the crazy?
Colwyn O'Reilly: should we maybe check out the hole?
Sergeant Almareth: Corbin, see if we can get a medevac from here. Otherwise we are slogging four hours with this guy.
Tyran Drenski: Are we sure he is an American?
Now that you have him knocked out in plain view in front of you, you are entirely sure he is an American GI.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): uniform don't make him american
Corbin Phoenix gets on the radio to HQ; see if they can pick us up at the church village.
Colwyn O'Reilly checks the soldier for any wounds, especially head trauma
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): it's internal
The name on his uniform is Handers. He is from 1st Brigade based out of Dak To (your unit.) If he is not American, then someone else is using blond white guys in their army in Vietnam.
Handers seems completely uninjured, except for a large welt where he was punched by Sarge.
Tyran Drenski: I think we should get going before what ever killed his platoon returns.
Ranger Richard: sound like a good plan
HQ radios back to Corbin that an evac chopper is en route.
Corbin Phoenix: Chopper is enroute and will pick us up by the church with the rest of the unit.
Tyran Drenski: I do not want to meet the Ape that can make a man crazy like that. I bet we were set here to find his platoon.
You gather everything up (tags and equipment from the fallen, etc.) and head back to the river.
Colwyn O'Reilly: i especially grab extra medical supplies (morphine)
GM: As you get to the river, make a Notice check.
Tyran Drenski happily packs up is explosives and heads out.
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 5]
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d4-1 = 9]
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d6 = 4]
Colwyn O'Reilly: -1
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): i'm paranoid
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 11]
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): Not as much as richard
[w] Corbin Phoenix: I just realized that I have Bad Luck... Meaning I only start with 2 bennies, and am therefore out of bennies for this session.
Tyran and Richard see the white ape thing. It is following along behind the group. You get a closer look at it, the thing is drenched in blood. The face looks sort of like an orangutaun. A chill rushes up your spine for a second, but when you turn to get a closer look, it is gone again.
[w] -> Corbin Phoenix: Okay
Tyran Drenski: We need to hurry. this thing is close and is out for blood
Colwyn O'Reilly is too busy carrying they psych patient
Corbin Phoenix runs accross / into the river and shouts for covering fire.
[w] Corbin Phoenix: I'm a bit of a faster runner than the others.... so when the river is in site I shoot accross yelling to hogpile
Ranger Richard: tell others teh white ape is back there
Tyran Drenski: (tells all) That Ape is following us and I think it's hungry. We need to hurry back to the church and set up defenses.
Colwyn O'Reilly: and medicated... what the hell are you people shooting at?
Sergeant Almareth: Once Hogpile opens up with the M60, keep up fire on the river.
Sergeant Almareth: Keep Handers there wrapped up.
Sergeant Almareth: I'm going to speak with the ape.
Corbin Phoenix: wait... what?
Tyran Drenski: You are crazier that Handers is Serg
Colwyn O'Reilly: apparently there's something in the food at that resturant as well
Hogpile: Covering fire aye!
Tyran Drenski: You speak Ape too?
Sergeant Almareth: "Speak" is a relative term there.
Sergeant Almareth: (he flashes a strange, almost feral grin)
Tyran Drenski: Colwyn I'll help you get Handers inside.
Colwyn O'Reilly: what ape? did a vietnamese monkey fling poo at you?
Hogpile: (opens up with the M60, bullets begin flattening the area around the squad as you Colwyn and Tyran cross the rifle)
Corbin Phoenix: I tell the guys at the church that evac is incoming.
Ranger Richard: Wow
Colwyn O'Reilly (mutters): must've been while I was being shot at
Tyran Drenski: Picks up a rifle
Colwyn O'Reilly: tyran, remind me not to order what he did at that resturant
Then Sarge runs off toward the tree line.
Tyran Drenski runs into the chuch and tells that others about their adventure.
Corporal Withers: There are times I am certain he is going to get us all killed. There are other times I think he just has a death wish.
Tyran Drenski: i'm never eating out here...ever
Colwyn O'Reilly carries the unconcious GI into the church and begins checking him more throroughly for injuries
Bookworm: You saw a what? A giant white ape. Sure. I'm with Colwyn on this one.
Colwyn O'Reilly (mutters): must've hit his head falling in that hole or something
Tyran Drenski makes sure there is NO weapons even pebbles around handers.
About ten minutes pass. Everyone has gathered near the church, except for Sarge.
Colwyn O'Reilly: maybe it's that stuff the guys have been smoking
Johannsen: Well, I see things are still lively in the squad. I was worried things would get boring.
Colwyn O'Reilly: tyran, remind me never to smoke anything here either... or be near it.
Tyran Drenski: I saw the white orangatan/Ape covered in blood. It's no joke.
Ranger Richard: me too
HQ radios to Corbin that Evac will be there in fifteen minutes.
Corbin Phoenix: Evac in 15 minutes!
Corbin Phoenix retrives gear he left here earlier.
Tyran Drenski: You better tell them it's a possible hot zone.
Colwyn O'Reilly: uh huh. and i saw jesus walking across the water with us
Since no one is firing (Hogpile stopped suppressing when everyone made it to the Church) the jungle is quiet.
Even the insect noises are gone.
Colwyn O'Reilly: probably scared by the crazies
GM: Notice checks everyone.
Tyran Drenski: you can laugh but the killer money is following us...
GM: (one last time for tonight)
Corbin Phoenix: Notice [1d6 = 9]
Tyran Drenski: Notice [1d4-1 = 2]
Ranger Richard: Notice [1d8 = 6]
Colwyn O'Reilly: Notice [1d6-1 = 10]
Colwyn O'Reilly: killer money?
Well, Tyran does not notice them, but finds them once everyone else points out something....
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): monkey can't type
The grafitti on the church includes several primitive drawiings of what looks like giant apes tearing people apart. The drawings are inside the church, scribbled on to pews and the floor.
Bookworm: Wow.
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): so we have killer spiders, Apes, next is bats...anteaters...elepahants
Alberts: That's a bit disturbing.
Tyran Drenski: Why didn't we see these drawling before?
[w] -> Tyran Drenski: You did notice that your claymores are missing.
Colwyn O'Reilly: next thing we'll have killer giant ducks
Bookworm: That would be scary. Ducks are mean man.
Asher (Colwyn O'Reilly): does that mean that there's ome awesome diamonds around here?
Tyran Drenski: Ahhh my claymores are missing. I packed them. I hope these moneys aren't smart.
About three seconds later, there is an explosion from the far side of the river.
Tyran Drenski: How long before the choppers here?
Corbin Phoenix: another 5 minutes I would guess.
It sounds like an excessive amount of explosive just went off.
The jungle becomes quiet again.
Colwyn O'Reilly: well, sarge just killed something
Tyran Drenski: I only had two I hope they use them over there.
You hear choppers in the distance.
Sergeant Almareth: I still don't think there is any such thing as a giant ape.
Colwyn O'Reilly: hi sarge
Sergeant Almareth: And that is what the official report is going to say.
Corbin Phoenix raises eyebrow.
Colwyn O'Reilly: i concur
Tyran Drenski rolls his eye
Nessie (Tyran Drenski): (eyes)
Ranger Richard: let crazy man put in his report!
Sergeant Almareth: He can report all he wants.
The choppers come in for a landing. Everyone is picked up and returned to base.
Tyran Drenski: I restock my claymores
Sergeant Almareth: I am fine with that.
Ranger Richard: hopefully my brother will be back to playing soon
Colwyn O'Reilly: yeah. one of these nights we'll get everyone together
GM: Now now, no world ending crazy events like that please.
