I thought these had gone by the wayside, but I have been recruited into a Play-By-Email game, and it is a great deal of fun.  Low setup, low maintenance, and an old fashioned way to get people together with massively different schedules.  Although I wonder if something similar could be pulled off with Slack.com or some similar madness.  As research gets done, progress will get posted.
