When last we left our group of intrepid explorers, they were standing at the lip of a small crater in the side of the volcano, inside the crater a number of recently slain bat-demons were clustered. Whatever they decided to fight was more than they could handle. Eight other bat-demons are circling above the group, staying just out of bow range and observing the characters.
GM: Volmalric determines the nearest available, and only significant cover, is to hide behind Tilpi.
Volmalric: Hmmm
GM: Or dismount from the spider-moose and use it as cover. You are wide open right now.
Tilpi: Ride on?
Volmalric: Well, this is not pretty
Volmalric: Prepare yourselves to attack if they decide to descend, but I don't see any other options
The path leads through the crater and further along the summit, before ending at what looks like an ornately carved entrance that looks suspiciously familiar to Volmalric, but not to Rhotinia or Tilpi.
Rhotinia: I suggest we ride hard and fast
Volmalric: A good suggestion
Rhotinia: There is no way to stay out of sight of those things
Volmalric: We'll have a place to go within the mountain here, there should be tunnels and infrastructure to go deeper
Rhotinia: You lead the way, Tilpi stay close. I will follow just behind in case we are attacked

Tilpi makes various excuses for her shoddy horse-riding.
Volmalric urges his spider-moose to amazing feats of dexterity, skills, and moose-manship that are unseen even in the heights of Valheim!
Volmalric does ALMOST fall off the fast moving spider-moose when he realizes he is actually RIDING a spider-moose.
Tilpi has issues with her Spider-moose, which she excuses as, "not riding a real horse".
Rhotinia maintains her skillful level of poise.
Tilpi: The ground isn't suited for hooves, and there's too many legs!
Volmalric: More legs means more speed!
Rhotinia: Would you run faster if you had an extra leg growing out of your back?
Tilpi: One day the gods will imagine a red, eight-legged horse. Then we are in business.
Tilpi winks at Volmalric
The group rides quickly along, when it is obvious they are going to "make a break for it" and head straight for the entrance, the bat demons descend to attack, swooping down within range to unleash a sorcerous blast on them.

Tilpi doesn't want to be shown up at another thing, and decides to pew pew while riding also.
Rhotinia launches a flurry of arrows at the onrushing bat demons and drops two from the sky. This does have to side effect of also drawing the aggro from them.

Volmalric: The downside is that anything that didn't know we were coming probably does now

A dozen rubbery skinned humanoids clad in simple loincloths with various weapons lie scattered about the entrance. Much like the bat-demons in the crater, whatever they were attempting to fight was a poor decision on their behalf.

The spider-moose and Rhotinia's horse do not seem very interested in moving into the volcano.

Tilpi looks to the group
Tilpi: ...no one at home will ever believe me if I told them about these.
Rhotinia says goodbye to her horse and moves into the cave enctrance
Rhotinia's noble horse agrees to carefully safeguard the spider-moose back to their home, as it is the responsible one.

The group collectively notes that the entrance looks like it was well-defended prior to... whatever happened here. The strange rubbery-skinned orangutuan creatures were well stocked with bows and arrows and there was equipment setup to provide them with flaming arrows to possibly drive off flying or other attackers.

It seems like there was also an alarm system in place that would have allowed them to alert people further inside the volcano. Also, you all remember that neither Meltam nor Freyda mentioned anything about these creatures.
Volmalric: Hmmm
Tack (Tilpi): The real challenge is conjuring the technobabble to describe the sorcery using a different vocabulary.
Tilpi: There's naught to do but delve.
The alarm system being a number of horns and other items which could be used to sound various alerts in a low-tech way.
Rhotinia leads the way down the creepy volcano cave
Tilpi: Though I can't help but feel we will come to miss the discarded parts of Meltam's psyche as we progress.
Volmalric lights a torch and follows after
The group heads down the lava tube for a short distance, but notices that this one has been expanded and carved by unknown hands. You feel that whoever carved this tunnel is not the creatures you spotted at the entrance, the work is far too clean and crisp for such simple creatures.

Volmalric: It's a mix of pictographs and Atlantean, but it's all nonsense. It's not a coherent mix, and I'm pretty sure the pictographs are providing the context I'm missing
The path does continue its descent, at a small decline. Rhotinia notices what smells like flame oil or some sort of really nice oil used for treating leather.
Rhotinia: I know an art dealer in Nemedia who would love to get in here and carve this ceiling into a thousands pieces
Tilpi: It is not Atlantean.
Tilpi: And it certainly shouldn't end up bartered for coin.
Tilpi: Onward?
Rhotinia: Is there any other choice?
Rhotinia leads on
Volmalric: Not Atlantean how?
Volmalric: What language is it?
Tilpi: I don't know that the word for it exists in any human tongue.
Tilpi: Darro, those creatures, use it
Volmalric: It's likely borrowed script in that case
Tilpi: Yes, but who borrowed from whom.
Tilpi smiles.
Rhotinia: How do you know so much about this horrible realm?
Tilpi: I am not sure. It feels familiar, like a summer wind.
The group continues down the path for a short distance and finds a patrol of the slaughtered creatures at a four way intersection. Given the way the corpses are scattered, you suspect the ones at the entrance failed to sound the alarm before they were all slain.
Volmalric: I've been trapped in a world like this before, through countless iterations
Volmalric: I'm surprised that you find this familiar, Tilpi
Tilpi: I too, am surprised.
A familiar looking, blood stained and blood soaked figure walks out of one of the nearby passages, a pair of daggers at the ready.
Sophie reeks of gray lotus and has a feral, almost animalistic expression on her face.
Sophie: Well, mom said you were coming. About damn time.
Sophie licks blood off one of the daggers.
Tilpi cannot believe her eyes.
