by Aki Heikkinen (Ikael)
Powers Extension features by Leo Gray (Velocinox)
Sensei: Okay, we will get started as soon as the Epic Novel that Mike is writing in a whisper has resolved.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): No Tack?
TADM: No idea, we will see if he shows up.
Kazuhiko: So close, yet so far
The group makes landfall on the south coast of Tetsu Sangaku. The captain bids you a fond farewell. The group decides to split up, Ikuko and her minions, as well as Kuutai, head through the western pass for Niidoru while Kazuhiko, Hida, and Yukiko head northwest through the foothils. Hida is given the task of carrying the ingredients for the elixir. Daichi and Kuutai both suspect that the group is being tracked, so they think it would be best to split up and figure that their group, radiating more magical power, will probably attract a lot more attention from the Void Walkers who have been pursuing the smuggling ship since it left harbor outside of Tsuyoki.
TADM: And so Sensei split the party, in order to explain why people are absent, and also to make the TPK more difficult.
TADM: Plus, it is more likely on the group that is NOT here tonight anyway...
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Do we get bonus XP if we still manage a TPK?
TADM: Yes, but it would also require that Dave be ready to run Accordlands on September 9th, and he would have to be the GM issuing the bonus XP.
Yukiko adjusts the backpack she is carrying.
Yukiko: Okay, shall we be off then?
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Ah, I don't think he would be cool with that at all.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): I still doubt I will be part of the Accordlands campaign. Would free me up for other gaming, though
Kazuhiko: Sounds good to me. Let's get going
Kazuhiko: By the way, Hida, wasn't your wife in these mountains the last you knew?
The group makes decent speed for the first day, as the foothills near the sea are easy to navigate and it is simple to follow the sun as it transits the sky.
Hida Sashimi: I believe so
Hida Sashimi: Notice [1d6 = 10]
Nick (Hida Sashimi): for threats or a tail
Hida rather suspiciously notes that...NO ONE is following the group.
Kazuhiko: That can't be right
Kazuhiko: Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 8]
Hida Sashimi: That either means that we aren't seen as a threat, or that they already know where we're going
Hida Sashimi: We should probably pick up the pace a little
TADM: I had to look that up, and shockingly, I don't own the Ticket to Ride Dice Expansion.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): It could use a few color dice as well.
The sun dips behind the western mountains, and the group needs to think about finding a place to sleep for the night.
Yukiko yawns.
Hida Sashimi: Survival [1d4 = 6]
Hida Sashimi: Let's sleep over here
Hida finds a nice convenient location that is defensible and near a small spring of fresh water.
Yukiko: That looks lovely, and the grass seems very soft.
Yukiko takes off her sandals and walks barefoot.
Kazuhiko: I'll take a quick look around and make sure the coast is clear.
Hida Sashimi: Good idea
Kazuhiko: I'll be nearby, so just hollar if anything happens.
Yukiko kneels over the spring and washes her face.
Sensei: Notice checks
Hida Sashimi: Notice [1d6 = 2]
Hida Sashimi is using a benny
Hida Sashimi: Notice [1d6 = 5]
Kazuhiko: Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6+4 = 7]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6+2 = 6]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Stealth {+2 Thief} [1d6+2 = 6]
Mountain Bear Cub: Tracking [1d6 = 5]
Both Hida and Kazuhiko spot what looks like bear tracks crossing the area. Some of them are much newer than others. This seems like a game trail.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Well, they'll explode regardless of star-status
Yukiko reclines on next to the spring and unties her hair. She shakes her hear and this causes the previous tightly coiled traditional hair style to fall free and wild. It is then that you realize she must have about 10 pounds of hair on her head, and it falls in heavy waves. It would almost make a blanket.
Yukiko: It is a bit cool today, is this normal for Tetsu Sangaku? This is so exciting to be visiting somewhere so far from home.
Kazuhiko: We are quite a bit farther north, so it will be a bit cooler up here
Kazuhiko: The winters are pretty harsh, though.
Hida Sashimi: Yes, they are a real bear to deal with
Sensei: Notice checks
Hida Sashimi: Notice {+1 Def Interest} [1d6+1 = 6]
Kazuhiko: Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 9]
Mountain Bear Cub: Tracking [1d6 = 2]
Hida and Kazuhiko hear the sound of bears in the distance, heading towards the spring. It sounds like they are a couple hundred feet away, and you almost think they are talking among themselves given the grunts and snorts they are making.
[TOWER] Hida Sashimi -> « Unskilled » {-2 } [1d6-2 = 2]
Kazuhiko: Do bears normally coordinate?
Yukiko begins putting her hair up again.
Yukiko: They do operate in family units when the cubs are younger.
Yukiko: Like most creatures, they kick them out at puberty though.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): How many exits are there? Plenty, or are we in a canyon sort of area?
Sensei: You have plenty of directions you can go.
Yukiko: Why, are there bears in the area?
Yukiko: Notice [1d12 = 10]
Kazuhiko: Smarts [1d6 = 14]
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Are bears not native to this area?
Bears are incredibly common to Tetsu Sangaku, they are considered something of a sacred animal. There is also the famed Tetsun Bear Cavalry, who are Yamabushi that ride bears into battle.
Yukiko: Perhaps we should move?
Kazuhiko: Oh yes
Hida Sashimi: I'd rather stay here, since we could get seperated in the dark
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Guessing no one made a fire?
Kazuhiko: Couldn't we get separated in the dark after the bears attack us?
Hida Sashimi: True
Sensei: No one said anything about making a fire yet, so I assumed no.
Sensei: Does someone want to make a fire?
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): I would not have, since I just came back from making rounds.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): What was Hida preparing for dinner?
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Lembas bread. And look! More lembas bread
Akemi appears, groin kicks Hida for making a LOTR reference, then vanishes.
Kazuhiko applaudes
Yukiko: Those are nice looking nori-wrapped rice cakes Hida, did you make them or are they from your wife?
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): the kick, not the LotR reference
Nick (Hida Sashimi): :( It's healthier than a brace of coneys
Hida Sashimi: It's her recipe. She taught me before we were seperated
Kazuhiko: Do we want to fall back or do we want to try to bribe the bears?
Kazuhiko: Er, assuming you can bribe bears
Kazuhiko: That might be a rather lethal assumption
The bears seem to be getting closer, as it is now obvious that they are heading for the spring.
Yukiko: Do we have treats for them?
Yukiko: I imagine they would accept meat...but I don't have any.
Hida Sashimi: We should move from here, but somewhere downwind so we can observe and reclaim when they leave
Yukiko: Or maybe fruits...
Yukiko: That is a good idea, Hida.
Yukiko finishes tying up her hair and puts her pack back on, then retrieves her sandals.
Kazuhiko: Sounds good.
Sensei: So the group heads out in a "downwind" direction?
Nick (Hida Sashimi): we are downwind of the bears, they are upwind of us, yes
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): only if "downwind" and "towards the bears" are not the same direction.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Assuming i don't have downwind and upwind mixed up
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): we go to where the wind will not blow our scent towards the bears
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): and inside the bears does not count
Nick (Hida Sashimi): exactly
The groups heads downwind of the bears and climbs a small hill that lets them observe the spring from a distance. A trio of bears, each about 8' in height and weighing probably about a half-ton, ambles into the clearing and settles down. They drink from the spring and recline on their posteriors. You would swear they are talking about something the way they sit there and wave their paws around. It is getting rather late, and dusk is rapidly fading into twilight. The clouds overhead mean it will be difficult to navigate by stars tonight or have a clear view of the area for very much longer.
Yukiko: What cute little bear cubs!
Yukiko: I wonder where mommy is.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): ...Oh dear
Hida Sashimi waits for the RAWRRRRR!! of momma bear
Hida Sashimi scans for the mama, or anything else as best he can
Mountain Bear Cub: Grunt, Grunt, Snarl, Snarl.
Hida Sashimi: Notice {+1 Def Interest} [1d6+1 = 8]
Kazuhiko: By the kami, those are huge
Kazuhiko: Those are bear cubs?
Sensei: Hida sees no giant bears, and also does not feel the ground shaking, which he suspects would be the case if "mommy" was coming quickly.
Yukiko: I think those are Tetsun Mountain Bears, which means those are probably only 1-2 years old.
Yukiko: I have only heard about them before, it is cool to see them in reality.
Kazuhiko: I've heard of the Tetsun Bear Cavalry, but I thought that they were cavalry as in horse cavalry, not Kikai...
Kazuhiko: Well, it's getting dark and the bears have taken our camp spot. We're going to have to find a new place to rest or make an arrangement with the bears.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): If Tack were here, we could just have him befriend the bears and then get them summarily executed within minutes.
The bears split up and amble out of the clearing, each heading in a different direction.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Random directions, or "surround them, I'll go this way" directions?
TADM: Tack would probably have befriended the bears, and then failed on some void check and brought an oni lord into the fight and had a TPK with the bears.
Sensei: Roll notice.
Hida Sashimi: Notice {+1 Def Interest} [1d6+1 = 11]
Kazuhiko: Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 11]
Hida is entirely convinced they are splitting up to look for something.
Hida Sashimi: Maybe they are looking for their mother?
Kazuhiko: I think it more likely that they noticed that there were humans down there.
Hida Sashimi: That could be too
Kazuhiko: On one hand, I'm alarmed that they're coordinating. On the other hand, that means that, maybe, they can be reasoned with
Hida Sashimi: As crazy as it sounds, I think our only two options are to go back to the clearing and wait for the bears, or try and figure out what they were looking for and help out
Yukiko: That does not necessarily sound crazy.
Kazuhiko: I suspect that doing the first would accomplish the second.
Hida Sashimi: Agreed
Kazuhiko: Either way, it is better for us to present ourselves to the bears proudly rather than being chased down.
Kazuhiko: Hida, can you speak Bear?
Sensei: So the group is heading back down to the clearing with the spring?
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): yes
Nick (Hida Sashimi): No to Kazuhiko, Yes to sensei
The group makes it back down to the clearing and is standing there for a couple minutes when the bears return.
Mountain Bear Cub ambles up to within 6' of the group and sniffs the air.
Mountain Bear Cub looks at Kazuhiko.
Kazuhiko looks at Hida
Kazuhiko looks back at the bear
Kazuhiko points at himself
Kazuhiko: Me?
Mountain Bear Cub nods.
Mountain Bear Cub growls in a strange way, then coughs.
Mountain Bear Cub: Your traps could be painful.
Mountain Bear Cub: But they are tiny and easily stepped on.
Yukiko: EEEK!
Yukiko attempts to climb the nearest tree.
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 5]
Kazuhiko: Wah! Yukiko, no!
Yukiko gets about 10' up the tree.
Kazuhiko facepalm
Hida Sashimi: We are sorry to disturb you, but you appear to be searching for something
Yukiko begins hyperventilating.
Mountain Bear Cub laughs at Yukiko.
Mountain Bear Cub looks at Hida.
Kazuhiko: I appologize. They were meant more as a hindrance and to alert us of possible hostiles
Kazuhiko: I'm glad that they caused no harm to your noble frames
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): don't eat me
Mountain Bear Cub: Yes, we are searching for you. Your wife, Akemi, asked us to find you and take you to Niidoru. She said she could not walk with you, but wanted to make sure you were safe.
Mountain Bear Cub looks at Kazuhiko.
Mountain Bear Cub: No offense taken, little man.
Sensei is wondering exactly how jacked and crazy this encounter would have been with Kuutai and Ikuko present.
Hida Sashimi: Is she alright? You can fill me in on the way
Yukiko: Bears...talking bears...I never imagined...maybe I am dreaming...I read about talking bears...
Kazuhiko heads over to Yukiko's tree
Mountain Bear Cub: She was doing fine the last we heard of her, albeit with large swollen feet and complaining of back aches.
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 7]
Kazuhiko climbs up the tree next to Yukiko's
Kazuhiko: Would you like help getting down?
Yukiko: Oh, no, I'm fine, just a little surprised is all.
Yukiko looks suspiciously at Kazuhiko.
Hida Sashimi: I would expect as much. She must be due any day now
Kazuhiko smiles
Yukiko: I don't like being touched...you just stay there and I will climb down.
Kazuhiko: Of course
Mountain Bear Cub: Quite possibly.
Kazuhiko slides down the tree first
Mountain Bear Cub: Our mother is not sure how human women can carry their children and walk on two legs.
Yukiko: Climbing [Critical Failure!] [1d6 = 1]
Yukiko is not amused at rolling a Critical Failure while trying to climb down from a tree.
Yukiko: AAHHHHH!!!!!
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Agility Trick! {+2 Acrobat, +2 Shadow Arts} [1d10+4 = 10]
Yukiko slips and falls face first towards the ground, only to be caught by Kazuhiko.
Yukiko: EEEKKK!
Yukiko: Don't touch me!
Yukiko slaps Kazuhiko and tries to bolt away from him.
Kazuhiko lets her down on the ground
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Going to mute Vent for a bit, but I'll still keep an eye on FG
Mountain Bear Cub looks at Yukiko.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): no probs, Vent is pretty quiet
Mountain Bear Cub: Human women, so odd.
Kazuhiko: You should see the other woman we travel with
Yukiko catches her breath from hyperventilating again.
Yukiko: Thank you for catching me Kazuhiko.
Kazuhiko: No problem.
Mountain Bear Cub: Perhaps, rest here tonight. We have divided the watch amongst ourselves. In the morning we shall take you by the fastest route we can to Niidoru.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): I'm reminded of that Spiderman scene in Family guy. "Everyone gets one"
Yukiko bows to the bears.
Yukiko: Thank you, honorable bear spirits.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): dammit, why couldn't we find these guys in Deadlands! Kazuhiko doesn't have Riding...
Kazuhiko looks surprised
Yukiko: I am amazed to find bears who speak Naganese.
Kazuhiko: Thank you very much.
Kazuhiko bows
Mountain Bear Cub sets up watch and settles down at the edge of the clearing.
Yukiko settles down by the spring and is asleep in about a minute.
Hida Sashimi: We are most appreciative of your service and protection. I just hope the rest of our group has such protection
Mountain Bear Cub: The dead ones are not the concern of the animal world.
Sensei: Any shenanigans?
Sensei: i.e. Like Kazuki trying to pickpocket the bears?
TADM: Oh wait...
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Wait, can bears be pickpocketed?
Sensei: You are welcome to try.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): I don't think we should paw through their belongings
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Hm, to tempt fate or not to tempt fate...
Nick (Hida Sashimi): NO! BAD MIKE!!
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): yeah, I don't mind killing PCs, but harming NPCs leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The night passes uneventfully. The next morning the bears move out, one in front and two behind the humans as you trek along. The group makes great time, as the bears seem to be following a path that is direct yet without human contact. That night, the bears stop in a clearing so the group can rest. Rather oddly there is a collection of honey combs, some fruit and vegetables waiting for the group.
Yukiko: Hida, your wife...is amazing.
Kazuhiko: This tops Ikuko's entourage by far
Hida Sashimi: Yes. Yes she is
Mountain Bear Cub sets up watch and hangs out at the edge of the clearing.
Days pass as the bears escort the group across Tetsu Sangaku and to the base of Niidoru. Every night there is a camp waiting for you with fresh food and supplies. It almost seems unreal to be traveling like this. Yukiko spends a lot of time smiling, humming, and singing as if the world is filled with happiness.
Yukiko: This has been an amazing journey.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): clearly no phobia of talking bears anymore
Mountain Bear Cub: We cannot go up Niidoru, it is the home of other creatures, and we are not welcome there. You have a better chance of dealing with them without us.
Mountain Bear Cub: Good luck to you.
Kazuhiko: It has been an honor
Hida Sashimi: Thank you. May you and your families live long and proud lives
Mountain Bear Cub: You as well, Hida Sashimi and your companions.
Mountain Bear Cub bows and departs in the morning after the group has broken camp and will begin the ascent of Niidoru.
Yukiko looks at Niidoru.
Kazuhiko: Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 9]
Hida Sashimi: Notice {+1 Def Interest} [1d6+1 = 6]
Kazuhiko: Well, this will be a fun climb
The mountain is a forebidding giant, you are at an elevation of about 4000', and all around you are huge mountains whose peaks are lost in the clouds. The one you are at the base of seems higher and darker than the rest. Lightning flashes in the clouds overhead and you swear you see flying shapes in the distant skies. The mountain looks like it can be climbed, but it will take effort and work, and you find yourselves wondering if you have brought the right gear.
Kazuhiko: Are there...things flying around the top?
Kazuhiko: I have 50 feet of silk rope.
Kazuhiko: Hida, how strong are your chopsticks?
Yukiko: Quite possibly, Niidoru is supposedly a celestial staircase and the summit has a portal to the Celestial Realms...I think. My knowledge of Tetsu Sangaku is a bit limited.
Hida Sashimi: Not that strong
Kazuhiko: Hm...well, if you give me some time I may be able to make some makeshift tools for climbing this.
Kazuhiko: Otherwise we'll have to do it bearhanded
Kazuhiko: Which would be fine for me, and fine for Yukiko going up, but you lose out in both directions, Hida
Kazuhiko smiles
Hida Sashimi waits for the straggler to kill you
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Did you happen to put a d12 in climbing for no particular reason, Hida?
Nick (Hida Sashimi): No
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 11]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 7]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [1d6+2 = 7]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6+2 = 7]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 7]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [1d6+2 = 16]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 6]
Hida Sashimi: Notice {+1 Def Interest} [1d6+1 = 10]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Agility Trick! {+2 Acrobat, +2 Shadow Arts} [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6+4 = 8]
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): brb
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 5]
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 4]
Sensei: Two climbing checks for Hida
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Strength, or Unskilled?
Sensei: Unskilled
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Was afraid of that
Hida Sashimi: « Unskilled » {-2 } [1d6-2 = 2]
Hida Sashimi: « Unskilled » {-2 } [1d6-2 = 8]
The group struggles most of the day, and spends about 16 hours climbing the mountain. As you collapse into a pile in a cave entrance, you figure you have climbed about 1/3 of the way up the mountain. You suspect it will only get harder.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Ugh
Kazuhiko: How are you holding up, Yukiko?
Yukiko sits down and shivers as she inhales deeply.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): is it cold?
Yukiko: This is a bit of a climb, more than I am used to, but I think I just need to rest.
Hida Sashimi: Me too
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Hm, did anyone bring food?
Sensei: It does not seem that cold to Kazuhiko or Hida Sashimi. But then, to a girl that grew up living on a volcano at a high elevation, this place is probably freezing. You get the feeling she is not suffering from a lack of oxygen so much as just being way out of her element.
Kazuhiko sits down and opens a small notebook. He pulls out a pen and ink jar and begins writing.
Yukiko: I think I have some food in my pack.
Hida Sashimi: As do I
Nick (Hida Sashimi): I hope
Yukiko slides her pack off and massages her shoulders for a minute, then reaches in and pulls out some rice balls and hands them out.
Yukiko gets about half way through a rice ball and goes to sleep.
Sensei: Actions from Hida and Kazuhiko?
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): does she just pass out or does she finish up and go to sleep?
Kazuhiko: Hm, I take it that means we should go a bit slower tomorrow.
Sensei: It seems more like she passes out than she finishes up and goes to sleep.
Hida Sashimi: Uh oh. Not a good sign
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Hm. I appear to have no points in Healing
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6+4 = 6]
Blizzard Wraith: I'm a cool monster, can I appear?
Sensei: Not yet.
Blizzard Wraith: Okay
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): That bodes well...
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Yeah, I know
World of Warcraft Wraith: I'm even cooler, and I'm a part of Blizzard, can I show up?
Sensei: Not in a million years.
World of Warcraft Wraith is sad.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Our sensei is banned from using you.
Kazuhiko cleans up after Yukiko and tucks her in. He provides her with a makeshift pillow out of his pack and the non-hard items in it. He stacks the hard items on the inner portion of the cave
Kazuhiko: OK, definitely going to go a bit slower.
Hida Sashimi: Agreed
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [1d6+2 = 12]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [1d6+2 = 12]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Repair {+2 Thief} [1d6+2 = 7]
Kazuhiko: but the last was probably a crit-fail
Over the course of the evening, Kazuhiko builds some rudimentary climbing tools.
Sensei: Other actions?
Kazuhiko keeps watch as he builds his tools.
Sensei: Otherwise, it will be morning. Also, who is on last watch?
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Hida
Hida Sashimi: Notice {+1 Def Interest} [1d6+1 = 12]
Hida notices nothing unusual. Yukiko wakes up and walks outside to "visit the little girl's room". About four minutes later he hears her talking with someone, but he can only hear Yukiko's voice.
Sensei: Actions?
Sensei: She does not sound alarmed or panicked.
Hida Sashimi goes out to check on her
Sensei: Hida finds Yukiko talking with a pair of wispy white clouds. They seem to communicate by flashing different colors. She turns to face Hida as he approaches.
Yukiko: Good morning Hida.
Hida Sashimi: Um...good morning
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Will-o-wisps, huh?
Yukiko: I was thinking how we could more safely travel up the mountain, and I think I found a solution.
Yukiko: This is Atakai.
Yukiko she gestures to a wispy cloud, that momentarily flashes red.
Yukiko: And this is Ashi.
Yukiko gestures to a wispy cloud, that momentarily flashes blue.
Yukiko: Atakai has agreed to keep me warmer, and Ashi will help you climb.
The one that pulsed red swirls around Yukiko and seeps into her clothing before disappearing.
Yukiko: Spellcasting +2 [1d12+2 = 12]
Hida Sashimi: That's very generous of them. What did they ask in return?
The other one swirls for a minute and then vanishes into Hida's leggings.
Sensei: Hida now has a d8 in Climbing.
Yukiko: They asked for nothing...they are doing a favor for us.
Yukiko: I merely entreated them to help us out and they agreed.
Hida Sashimi: I don't like favor. I'm a man of contracts. But I am still thankful
Yukiko: They said something about, in the past, I helped them out. I am not quite sure what they meant by that, since I do not remember leaving Burnt Mountain before.
Yukiko: Let's go get Kazuhiko and try to get up the mountain.
Yukiko heads back into the cave and makes some noise to wake Kazuhiko up.
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 15]
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 3]
Sensei: Climbing checks to scale the mountain
Kazuhiko: Oh, good morning. Feeling better?
Hida Sashimi: Climbing [Critical failure!] [1d8 = 1]
Hida Sashimi is using a benny
Hida Sashimi: Climbing [1d8 = 5]
Kazuhiko: Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 9]
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Way to spend that new D8
Nick (Hida Sashimi): No kidding. That's why I don't like favors
Sensei: Okay, another set of climbing checks
Kazuhiko: Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 5]
Hida Sashimi: Climbing [1d8 = 5]
Kazuhiko is using a benny
Kazuhiko: Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 11]
It is another long and grueling slog up the mountain, you spend another 16 hours climbing up, the air is getting thinner and colder. Although Kazuhiko notices that the cold does not bother Yukiko any more. He also notices that Hida has become quite proficient at mountain climbing compared to yesterday. By nightfall you are above the tree line and as you find shelter in a cave for the night, you spot large winged lizards sailing through the air above you. They appear not to have noticed the group yet, but you get the feeling they are not friendly.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): dwagons?
Sensei: Knowledge check to identify
Hida Sashimi: Smarts [1d6 = 4]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Kn(Lore & Legends) {+1 Defining Interest} [1d4+1 = 4]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Smarts [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 4]
Kazuhiko and Hida are both convinced these creatures are Waaivan, a distant relative of dragons, but feral, carnivorous, and immediately hostile to humans. They do not get along with Tengu either.
Kazuhiko: We should be careful not to be spotted
Hida Sashimi: Agreed
Yukiko: Good idea.
Hida Sashimi: So what's the plan?
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Kn(Lore & Legends) {+1 Defining Interest} [1d6+1 = 3]
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Smarts [1d6 = 8]
Kazuhiko: Well, it's no use traveling by night. Not only is it more hazardous for us, but the Waaivan are also able to see in the dark
Kazuhiko: How many Waaivan are up there?
Kazuhiko: Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 9]
Sensei: Kazuhiko spots at least four.
[TOWER] Kazuhiko -> Notice {+2 Trapsense, +2 Alertness} [1d6+4 = 9]
Kazuhiko looks intently up the mountain
Sensei: You spot a couple narrow crevices that would cause them to attack you on foot instead of just being able to swoop over and pluck you off the mountain.
Hida Sashimi: Aren't we near a cave? If it's getting dark, we should wait til morning
Yukiko: I agree, and make sure it is a cave that does not smell like a Waaivan lair.
Kazuhiko: What does a Waaivan lair smell like?
Yukiko: Umm...I'm not sure, but I imagine something nasty.
TADM: So...Kazuhiko dies.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): nah, I'm going into the non-lair cave
TADM: Still dies.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): was it death by falling rocks?
TADM: No, you died from old age, tragically.
TADM: In your sleep.
Kazemi (Kazuhiko): Q.Q
Any way, the night passes uneventfully and the next morning the group wakes up and begins to look over the ascent again. With some luck and by avoiding danger the group should make the summit today, assuming that the peak that is still shrouded in the clouds is not that much higher up the mountain than can be seen.
Hida Sashimi: Let's get this over with
TADM: Hmm...there are way too many "that" in the previous sentence.
Sensei: Okay, Climbing and Stealth checks.
Yukiko: Stealth [1d10 = 8]
Yukiko: Stealth [1d10 = 4]
Kazuhiko: Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 6]
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 5]
Yukiko: Climbing [1d6 = 5]
Kazuhiko: Stealth {+2 Thief} [1d10+2 = 10]
Waaivan: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 1]
Hida Sashimi: Climbing [1d6 = 15]
Hida Sashimi: « Unskilled » {-2 } [1d6-2 = 2]
Yukiko: Notice [1d8 = 4]
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Si
Waaivan: Notice [Trait roll was a natural 1] [1d6 = 1]
TADM: Wow...umm...amazing.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): What, did they all crit fail?
TADM: Yes, the Waaivan did Crit Fail, twice. So I decided not to GM benny since it is obvious FG did not want me to run that combat.
Sensei: I need one more climbing check from Kazuhiko.
Nick (Hida Sashimi): ignore first
Kazuhiko: Climbing {+2 Thief (urban only)} [1d6+2 = 7]
All right, somehow the group manages to avoid any altercations with the Waaivan as you complete the ascent.
The group reaches the heights of Niidoru and finds a small stone altar at the summit. There is a tiny fire in the middle of the altar that has no source of fuel. All around you is snow and only the thick cloud cover prevents snow blindness. Yukiko bows before the altar and begins praying. Hida is quite certain this is the place that Sanmiiru described.
Kazuhiko: Well, do what we came here for, Hida
Kazuhiko bows to the altar
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Okay, what did we have to do? (Note appears to be missing)
Hida Sashimi: I guess we have to wait for when the Celestial Palace is visible
There you go, you should have two copies of the grocery list.
As Hida states that, the skies part and the rays of golden light strike the altar.
TADM: Hida breaks out his IRON CHEF routine.
Hida Sashimi quarter fills bowl with snow, then places it on altar. Adds ingredients after snow melts
Hida Sashimi: Kn (Cooking) {+1 Food (Def. Interest)} [1d4+1 = 12]
Sensei: Nice rolling.
Hida works quickly and efficiently mixing everything together and preparing the elixir. It takes him a couple hours, but when he is done all that remains in the clay bowl is a glowing golden liquid.
TADM: Nice job blowing through the "make a skill check every two hours until 3 successes are achieved" trait check.
Hida Sashimi: Do we have a bottle or something to keep this in?
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Lol why thank you
TADM: And it was said, that this was Hida Sashimi's finest hour...
Nick (Hida Sashimi): What skill was it actually supposed to be?
TADM: Honestly? Cooking. Would have been a pain if it had been untrained...
Kazuhiko records the event in his journal
Yukiko hands Hida Sashimi a crystal vial.
Hida Sashimi carefully fills the vial, then places it in the most secure and safe part of his pack
TADM: Right, between Hida's great rolling and the monsters' hideous rolling, this has been much less dangerous than originally intended.
Yukiko: We should get headed back down the mountain, it is getting late and we need to be out of the snow fields before dark.
Yukiko: I suspect we have been lucky to avoid the denizens of this place so far, but our luck cannot hold forever.
Kazuhiko: Well, lets hope it holds for only a short while
The group heads back down the mountain.
Waaivan: Awww, I wanted to kill the PCs...
Nick (Hida Sashimi): Maybe next time
