The fires are raging through Messantia, ranging from the gaping holes blown in the wall by the undead sorcerer all the way down to supplies on the docks ablaze from discarded torches and lanterns. Hundreds of ghouls, thousands of zombies, and other creatures are attacking any humans they find while the Messantian town guard and the various military units and noble bodyguards rally to try and defend from the unexpected onslaught. On a hill near the graveyard, overlooking the chaos and destruction of the city, Meltam's corpse burns to ash as witchfire engulfs the remnants of the battle between Rhiveth, the undead sorcerer, and Cilissa.
Democles: Well, this is not how I was expecting my day to go.
Angus: I quite agree.
Rhotinia: At least you're alive
Rhotinia: It could have gone much worse
Asgrim: By Freya's frosty nipples, I hope this barge has an open bar.
Volmalric: I don't know about much worse
Volmalric: It could have been worse, though
Rhotinia: Sadly Asgrim, I was delivering leather, not spirits
Volmalric: How much room do we have for refugees?
Adolphus gets out pocket spyglass and looks at the city.
Adolphus: Well Angus, I'm pretty sure our shops are currently burning to the ground.
Rhotinia: I am no sailor, but I am sure we can accomodate more passengers
Angus: To Rhotinia's point, I'm not inside the shop, so it's not all bad.
Volmalric: We'll probably see the plume when the fires hit the Whisperwood Inn
Sailor: Aye ma'am, you want us to start fishing folk out of the water?
Rhotinia: Yes, grab anyone you can
Volmalric: Keep an eye on capacity and be ready to leave
Several large schooners, many barges, and lots of small but overloaded rowboats are carrying people away from the fighting on the docks.
Volmalric: We want people on board, not ghouls
Volmalric: Can I see the spyglass?
Rhotinia hands the glass to Volmalric
Sophie: I'd worry more about zombies or skeletons cutting holes in the bottom of the barge.
Democles gulps loudly.
Volmalric looks out for some sort of heraldry or symbols to identify the sorcerer or the undead
Sophie: Guess I will go check for that.
Volmalric: Wouldn't it be easier to climb up and kill us like that?
Volmalric used a Fortune point to add a Natural 1 to their dice pool
Sophie jumps overboard and sinks like a rock.
Volmalric rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.17+1d20.9 = 26]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric: Do we know who, or what, that sorcerer is out there?
Rhotinia: You mean Rhiveth or Meltam?
Volmalric: Meltam would not have caused this
Volmalric: I mean, he might have provoked the thing that caused this
Volmalric: But he would neither have the will nor the way to summon quite so many undead
GM: w/ Volmalric You recognize the sorceror as the Acheronian stone golem sorcerer (Thumocris) that Metalm released WAY BACK AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CAMPAIGN AND COMPLETELY DERAILED THE ENTIRE DAMN THING....
GM: Oh, whoops.... ;)
Volmalric: Oh shit
Volmalric: Uh, I think it's dead?
Volmalric: So, bad news, its not causing all the undead to turn to dust
Volmalric (mutters): Because that would be too convenient
Rhotinia: I think this sounds like good news to me
Rhotinia: Cilissa will have her hands full
Volmalric: Good news for it being dead, but there could be undead in the sewers for decades
Rhotinia: We can slip back into the city and recover that "Tome of Skelos"
Rhotinia: While Cilissa is busy dealing with the undead invasion
Volmalric: Ugh, I do not want to go back in there, but it is a really good distraction
Volmalric: This will also do a lot to trim down the available lives Cilissa has to throw away
Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 4 Momentum: 3 [1d20.2+1d20.3 = 5]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia rolls a Society test:
Target: 16 Focus: 5 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.13+1d20.7 = 20]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric rolls a Society test:
Target: 11 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.1+1d20.7 = 8]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Tilpi: (A low rumbling is heard from the Barge's hold)
Rhotinia: That isn't a great sound
Tilpi: (The grate to the cargo area pops up, and a person emerges)
Tilpi: Who owns all these wonderful leathers? I have never seen such quality before!
Rhotinia: I should think not, I paid hansomly for them in Ophir
Rhotinia: Yuz-Bashi Rhotinia of Ophir
Rhotinia bows
Rhotinia: And might I ask who you are and what you were doing down there?
Tilpi: I am only Tilpi of Hyrkania.
Tilpi: I could smell this tanning from miles away and had to see with my own eyes.
Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.20+1d20.4 = 24]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Tilpi: I trust you would not hold it against another conisuer of fine leathers? I meant no harm and would not steal.
Tilpi appears as a weathered yet healthy looking woman with wind-etched features, wearing worn sturdy robes of coarse fabric. Sun-bleached skin covers a warm and enduring smile. There is an air of timeless patience about her, with delibrate actions and laconic speech.
Rhotinia: If the situation were not so dire I might be less inclined to accept your answers, but these are troubling times....
Tilpi rolls an Observation test:
Target: 11 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.11+1d20.16 = 27]
You did succeed!
Tilpi: I see. Neither you nor your leather are in danger?
Rhotinia: This is a relative term...
Rhotinia: For the moment, we seem to safe
Rhotinia: But Volmalric and I were just discussing our plans to return to Messantia, so that will not last
Tilpi: Not much does.
Tilpi: I am curious what you seek there. You have enough leather here for an entire village. You could make a Yurt for a chief!
Rhotinia: I was not intending to make anything with this leather, I came here to sell it
Rhotinia: I am not a craftswoman
Rhotinia: But it seems I will have to find somewhere else for this shipment, Messantia has bigger problems right now
Rhotinia: As for what we seek...
Rhotinia fills Tilpi in on the situation
Tilpi is enthralled by tales of high scorcery and low living.
Tilpi: I still do not understand the value of a book, nor what you seek to exchange for these leathers.
Rhotinia: For the leathers: I seek money
Tilpi stares blankly.
Rhotinia: As for the book, I am hoping that with it, we can enlist the aid of this Lemurian princess to help solve this mess we are currently in
Rhotinia: She seems to be an enemy of Cilissa, and I will never be able to do business in Messantia as long as the same can be said of me
Tilpi: If she is a princess, why does she require payment to help her people? Is it not her duty?
Volmalric: Her people are long since dead
Sailor: Ma'am, we have about thirty folks on board, and many more are clustered around us in a raft. We seem to be luckier than others.
Sailor gestures at a nearby barge that seems to be swarmed with undead and is sinking after being holed in the bottom.
Volmalric: Which begs the question of what her motivation is. I'm hoping it's altruism
Rhotinia draws her bow
Rhotinia: Bring us in closer
Rhotinia: We must do help them
Sailor: To... uh... what?
Rhotinia: Are there no survivors?
Rhotinia: Volmalric has my spyglass
Rhotinia: I cannot see
Asgrim: By Thor's swollen testes! Let's board that ship and smash us some good skeleton heads!
Angus: You know, I have to admit, I'm becoming a fan of these Norse gods of yours.
Volmalric hands Rhotinia the spyglass again
Angus shoulders hammer.
Tilpi rolls a Lore test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.14+1d20.17 = 31]
You did succeed!
Rhotinia rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.18+1d20.2 = 20]
You did succeed!
Adolphus: I'm...uh... old and not inclined to combat, I'm going to stay here with Bridgit.
Rhotinia looks for survivors on the sinking barge in need of rescuing
Adolphus gestures to sleeping girl curled up on a pile of leather.
Tilpi: Yes. Of all the gods you folk seem to favor, those of the norse seem most at one with themselves. Only one is malicious, thankfully you keep talk of him low-key.
Rhotinia provides covering fire for the people on the docks attempting to flee
Rhotinia rolls a Ranged test:
Target: 13 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.17+1d20.9 = 26]
You did succeed!
Democles: I'm not old, but I'm not a fighter, so I'm going to just hang out here until I have to defend myself, and then I'm hoping I can negotiate a hostage deal or ransom off some item on my possession for safe-passage.
Rhotinia: Just keep heading out of town, but get as many people out of the water and away from those ghouls as you can
Rhotinia: We cannot save Messantia, but we should do what we can on our way out
Sailor: You've got it ma'am!
Sailor: You heard her boys, boss wants us to be heroes in a safe way.
The crew of the barge does their best to protect people and follow Rhotinia's instructions.
Tilpi: Rhotinia, can you spare some of your leather?
Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.14+1d20.19 = 33]
You did not succeed.
Rhotinia: What for?
Rhotinia: And how can you be worried about that at a time like this?
Tilpi: Why, to make ropes to rescue people!
Rhotinia: I have... never heard of a leather rope, but sure....
Rhotinia continues firing on the undead
Tilpi: You've made a wonderful decision!
Tilpi rolls a Survival test:
Target: 13 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.20+1d20.5 = 25]
You did succeed!
Volmalric rolls a Lore test:

Tilpi rolls a Craft test:
Target: 13 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.12+1d20.8 = 20]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Asgrim and Angus are helping the crew and on the lookout for any undead or ghouls which make it to the barge.
Kazemi (Volmalric): Four successes on that Lore check! Scribe actually triggered for once
Tilpi appears busy stretching and tearing expensive leathers into makeshift ropes.
Democles: Umm... I may regret asking this, but Bridgit's twin, should we be worried about her at all? She jumped overboard and that was several minutes ago.
Adolphus: I'm not worried about her at all, if that makes you feel any better.
Democles: I suspect you telling me why you are not worried about her would probably be bad for my mental health.
Adolphus: Yes.
Volmalric: She should be fine. That cannot be said for the aquatic ghouls in the waters
Rhotinia: Honestly, probably the fastest way to reclaim the city would be to give her some more of those drugs Meltam gave her and just set her loose
Rhotinia: I'm sure she'll be fine
Tilpi looks for wounded or traumatized people
Tilpi rolls an Observation test:
Target: 11 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.15+1d20.20 = 35]
You did not succeed.
Tilpi Im a rolling 20 MACHINE
Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.13+1d20.14 = 27]
You did succeed!
Volmalric pulls out the sunburst symbol he wears under his robe
Volmalric: Ghouls are not wholly natural creatures. They are weak to holy symbols, especially those of Mitra. If anybody has any such trinkets, now's the time to show them off
Volmalric: They're afraid of brighter lights as well, so fire will work as well, but we probably don't want to play with too much fire on a boat
It looks like the situation in the city is starting to stabilize, by virtue of the fact that the undead army seems to have claimed most of the city that is not part of walled estates. Also, the Messantian marines and royal guards are now pushing out of their district and back towards the city walls. The undead and ghouls seem to be mostly feral and are not following much of a plan, so aside from numbers, ferocity, and fear effects, they do not have a whole lot going for them.
Rhotinia turns to the sailors
Rhotinia: Find a safe place to get close to shore so we can disembark
Sailor: Yes ma'am!
Rhotinia turns to Volmalric
Tilpi begins whistling airy and fanciful tunes.
Sailor moves the barge to the eastern side of the harbor where there is less fire and combat.
Rhotinia: This is our chance, Cilissa and her guard are occupied, and the chaos has waned
Volmalric: Uuugh
Volmalric: I hate that you're right
More and more rafts and small boats are clustering around the barge, since for some reason this barge is not being swarmed and attacked by underwater undead.
Rhotinia: You men, take the barge up river, back to Ophir. Tell my brother what has happened here
Rhotinia: Hopefully the situation will be resolved by then, but if not, he should know
Sailor: Yes ma'am!
Rhotinia carefully drags her horse off the barge
Volmalric: It could also serve as a good point to build goodwill with the city
Adolphus: If you don't mind Rhotinia, Angus and I will take the barge up to Ophir with your men.
Volmalric: Angus, can you do me a favor while you're out that way?
Rhotinia: Yes of course
Rhotinia: Asgrim, I hope you will join us
Rhotinia: We could use your stout resolve in the hours and days ahead
Asgrim: Ma'am, I'm not one to shirk from a fight, and I'm happy to help out.
Volmalric: steps in and speaks privately with Angus
Democles: On one hand, I'd like to be safe in Ophir. On the other hand, getting to see a real Tome of Skelos is hard to pass up. If only someone would have an insightful suggestion of what I should do right now!
Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.11+1d20.7 = 18]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia ponders Democlese for a moment
Tilpi: Safey is an illusion.
Tilpi: Safety may be the most pernicious illusion of all time.
Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.12+1d20.2 = 14]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Democles: Ah, good point! Thank you kind Hyrkanian stranger, I will completely take your advice to risk my life to being eaten alive by rampaging undead!
Rhotinia: We could do with your help as well if I am honest, I am no expert in ancient Acheronian and Lemurian texts. I am not even entirely sure I will know this tome when I see it
Democles: Also a good point Rhotinia.
Adolphus: Umm... I have a different problem to discuss. One that I think Meltam would have had an answer for but he is not here.
Volmalric: Which city in Ophir?
Tilpi: Rhotinia has told me much of Meltam. Perhaps I can answer it?
Volmalric: I've spent too much time around the man. What were you wondering?
Adolphus: We have one sleeping barmaid and one occupied barmaid. Given what a few of us know... what is the best course of action for them? Is it safe for us to take them to Ophir? Or are they connected to Messantia in some way and we need to leave them here?
Rhotinia rolls a Sorcery test:
Target: 7 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [2d20.11 = 22]
You did not succeed.
Tilpi rolls an Insight test:

You did succeed!

Tack:

Rhotinia ponders Adolphus' question
Tilpi: I think it is unwise to separate sisters. They are one of a kind?
Adolphus: Yes, I think they need to be together.
Adolphus: Let me rephrase, "It is very unhealthy for them to be apart from what I have seen"
Tilpi: Surely they can care for each other far better than any of us?
Adolphus: Kind Hyrkanian woman, I am certain they are normally capable of taking care of themselves, these are not normal times.
Tilpi nods in agreement.
Rhotinia: Now that you mention it, if Sophie sees her sister unconscious on a barge heading up river, I don't think there would be any survivors....
Volmalric: Meltam gave me the impression that an ancestor of theirs was bound here. I do not know if they've remained near the city out of nostalgia or some other reason, but it is a good idea to keep them near the city rather than to take them elsewhere
Rhotinia: It is settled then, Bridgit comes with us
Rhotinia: Help me get her up on the back of the horse
Tilpi rolls an Animal Handling test:
Target: 11 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [1d20.16+1d20.18 = 34]
You did not succeed.
Rhotinia rolls an Athletics test:
Target: 10 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.16+1d20.2 = 18]
You did succeed!
Rhotinia rolls an Athletics test:
Target: 10 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.17+1d20.6 = 23]
You did succeed!
Rhotinia hoists Bridget up and lays her across the back of her horse
Bridgit looks around groggily from the back of Rhotinia's horse.
Tilpi hums soothingly to Bridget
Bridgit: Mom, I don't feel so good. I'm cold, why is it so cold?
Bridgit looks at Tilpi and smiles.
Bridgit: Oh, you are nice.
Bridgit goes back to sleep.
Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.11+1d20.9 = 20]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Volmalric: Adolphus, is there any other treatment Bridget will require?
Tilpi carefully places her outer layer of robe on Bridget.
Tilpi: There there, you are safe now.
Volmalric: Tilpi, do you know how to use a sword or bow?
Feneril (Rhotinia): If not, here put on this vest of vials and fuses...
Tilpi: Um. No.
Adolphus: Yes, give her these every four hours or so until she is back to her normal happy and cheery self.
Adolphus hands Volmalric a satchel full of individually wrapped poultices.
Volmalric: How long does that take? I imagine the current situation may impede the "happy normal and cheery" self
Around the group of you, more and more people are gathering, because for some reason it is "safe" here. Asgrim heads to the end of the dock and flexes imposingly. Which intimidates nothing because there are no undead or ghouls in the immediate vicinity.
Rhotinia: We need to cut the chatter and get moving, our window of opportunity here may already be closing
Adolphus: Usually a day or two. Right now, well, that is a week supply, it is all I could grab from my shop when Angus burst in the front door fighting some ghouls.
Rhotinia rolls a Society test:
Target: 17 Focus: 5 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 0 Momentum: 0 [2d20.18 = 36]
You did not succeed.
Angus: Well, let's get the barge out of here while the getting is good, we need to head out and around to the west side of the harbor and up the river.
Volmalric: Perfectly fine! Thank you, I look forward to speaking with you later
Sailor: As soon as Lady Rhotinia gives the word.
Adolphus gets back on the barge.
Rhotinia: Off you go then, safe travels
Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.1+1d20.15 = 16]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia confers with Tilpi
Angus: Best of luck, I hope to see you all alive in a couple weeks.
Volmalric gives a bow
Angus gets back on the barge.
Volmalric sticks his head underwater and yells "SOPHIE"
Volmalric pulls his head out and wipes his face off
Sailor packs everything up and heads to out to deeper waters and then directs the barge back towards Ophir.
Asgrim walks back down the dock and hands a piece of paper to Rhotinia.
Rhotinia reads the note
Asgrim: Ma'am, a swarthy looking fellow carrying a bunch of loot said to give this to you.
Asgrim: It is not at all suspicious or unusual, but my sense of the blindingly obvious tells me he probably works for some ne'er-do-wells that you likely have no experience with, being such a respectable merchant and all.
Asgrim walks back down to the other end of the dock.
Rhotinia: Ok, everyone follow me. And stay alert.
Tilpi: Sure thing.
Rhotinia mounts her horse and leads the group down the docks towards the warehouse district
Rhotinia: I have an old friend that may be able to help, if he is still alive
Volmalric follows after, a pouch at the ready
Volmalric: Fantastic, because I'll need some supplies
The group reaches the warehouse district with a minimum of fuss. A few errant ghouls attack the group, but Rhotinia shoots them or Asgrim chops them into gooey bits. It seems like the ghouls and undead are mostly blindly attacking things without any real sense of a plan.
Democles hangs near Rhotinia, on the assumption that she will shoot anything dangerous before it gets too close.
The group is about three streets from the docks when a soaking wet Sophie walks in from a side street.
Tilpi appears uneasy and perturbed by the undead.
Rhotinia: Sophie, good you found us
Volmalric waves Sophie over
Rhotinia: Are you feeling... better?
Sophie: Better than what?
Sophie: Better than forty or so ghouls? Yes.
Sophie: I could use some alcohol, for cleaning purposes.
Sophie: And I think I chipped a nail.
Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.1+1d20.2 = 3]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia: Wonderful dear. If Lefty is still alive, I am sure he will have some spirits we can buy for you
Sophie looks at her hand forlornly. It looks like one of the fingers is bent at the knuckle on a ninety-degree angle from the others.
Tilpi: Oh this will not do. Give me your hand, your sister will not bear to see you in pain like this.
Volmalric flinches at Sophie's hand
Volmalric: Agreed, we've got to get you wrapped up
Tilpi used a Fortune point to add a Natural 1 to their dice pool
Tilpi rolls a Healing test:

Tilpi fixes Sophie's hand and sets it, then offers plenty of great advice on anger management, hostility, and needing to talk through your problems.
Democles looks squeamish at the "fixing" going on over there, especially given that fingers are bent in directions they should not be. He decides to make small talk with Rhotinia while they wait for the door to open to the warehouse after hearing some yelling from inside.
Asgrim is on patrol for nasty creatures.
Bridgit is asleep.
Sophie looks at Tilpi.
Sophie: Well, if you really want to know, I spend most of my life questioning my existence. Seriously? Why am I here?
Sophie: I mean, all these sacks of meat and blood wandering around in aimless short brutish lives.
Tilpi: To survive.
Sophie: Really? That is all there is to life? Survival. That is kind of depressing.
Tilpi: I'm not sure there's more to think about. If you ask me everyone around here is too complicated. Bartering for goods. Bartering with souls. Living is sufficient for an uncomplicated person.
Volmalric: There are other things one can find as well to give them strength
Volmalric glances at Bridget
Sophie shrugs.
Volmalric: And the world does have some interesting things in it as well, if one looks in the right places.
Sophie: There is something to be said about a simplified life.
Volmalric laughs
Volmalric: Agreed, that's where Slumbara has returned to
Volmalric: Many others don't get that lukcy
Sophie: Sure, there is plenty of wonder in this world as well. I guess we need to stop and enjoy it sometimes.
Tilpi: On the steppe, there is survival. I wasn't too bothered there.
Sophie: Hmm... maybe Bridgit and I need to try living on the Steppes, and being away from the bustle of the city. We have been here a long time.
Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.14+1d20.4 = 18]
You did succeed!
Sophie: A quiet little piece of land, lots of sheep to eat. Especially after Bridgit starts naming and caring for them.
Volmalric: Have you ever left the city?
Sophie: Not that I remember, other than going out into the nearby wilds to look for ingredients.
Tilpi: What would make you feel more at home?
Democles: When I would talk to Bridgit at the Whisper Wood, she said she had never left the city.
Tilpi: I know much of what the wilds provide.
Sophie: I do kind of like being out in the wilds and away from the city. Sometimes I go out for two or three days just to get away from it and the world is so much more peaceful. The smell of the city makes me angry. So many walking lumpy food sacks.
Volmalric: There are all sorts of places to explore. Other cities that are much different from Messantia, and smaller towns with mere dozens of people
Volmalric: You two could go on quite the vacation
Volmalric: Ask people for interesting places of natural wonder, and you may be surprised how nice some of them are
Rhotinia walks up to a non-descript warehouse and knocks on the door four times
Rhotinia: He will help us if he is alive, but that is a big if, no one is answering....
Rhotinia knocks on the door again
