GM: Okay, our intrepid band of adventurers is now splitting up so Volmalric can watch over 3 heavily injured NPCs while Tilpi, Rhotinia, Asgrim, and Democles go to pay Argala a visit.
Rhotinia wastes no time leading the way to Argala's estate
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls an Observation test:
Target: 9 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.2+1d20.9 = 11]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia spots random groups of undead, guards, ghouls, and looters engaging in brutal slaughter of each other and any random civilians they find. However, the group makes to the nearby location pointed out by Palantes without serious mishap.
Rhotinia scopes out the joint
Tilpi is unimpressed with civilization
Rhotinia scopes out the Dyiary family estate mentioned by Palantes and it appears to have been attacked earlier in the evening, but is currently unoccupied from what she can tell. The outer walls are scorched from fires and the gates are broken, peering inside (not yet entering the courtyard) reveals several corpses of scattered about. The inner building has some scoring and fire marks, but appears to be undamaged. The windows and doors are barricaded... from the outside.
Rhotinia readies her bow
Rhotinia: Asgrim, be on your guard
Asgrim: This is not exactly what I was expecting.
Rhotinia: Nor I
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 1 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.20+1d20.4 = 24]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Democles: HA! At this point, I have foregone all expectations!
Rhotinia carefully crosses into the courtyard
Tilpi: Asgrim, you should go break down those barricades in the most quick way possible
Tack (Tilpi): (roll was counsel as persuade lol)
Kazemi (Volmalric): Our heroes sneak through Raccoon City. Can they find the documents they need?
Rhotinia: That seems rash and ill thought out
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Persuade test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.18+1d20.7 = 25]
You did succeed!
Tilpi acts clippy towards Rhotinia
Tilpi: Yeah a little more property damage will really make a difference here.
Rhotinia: I am more worried about what is inside the building
Rhotinia: The doors were barred from the outside
Tilpi shrugs
Rhotinia: If a horde of undead are trapped inside, I would prefer we don't release them
Asgrim: Well, I'm not seeing enough people here to care whether the building is barricaded or not, but I'm agreeing with Rhotinia that the placement of the barricades seems suspicious.
Tilpi: I was told you people sought a good death. Perhaps I a misinformed?
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Counsel test:
Target: 13 Focus: 4 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.2+1d20.7 = 9]

Democles whistles "I'm surprised I'm still alive" merrily.
Rhotinia: A good death is an old death

Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.14+1d20.18 = 32]
You did succeed!
Asgrim: Good does not necessarily mean foolish, perhaps you have mistaken me for one of my Slayer brethren? Notice the absence of orange mohawk.
Asgrim points at head, where he has a helmet.
Tilpi: It would take an expert thief to do thus subtly.
Rhotinia: Rhotinia rolls a Survival test:
Target: 9 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.4+1d20.6 = 10]

You did succeed!
Rhotinia gingerly walks throught the courtyard, carefully eyeing the footprints in the sand
Tack (Tilpi): I am a little confused how Volmalric stayed with the injured and this character is sent on a daring mission
Rhotinia: Strange... These people were fleeing as fast as they could. It looks almost like the ghouls assembled this barricade
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Lore test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.11+1d20.17 = 28]
You did succeed!
Tilpi: I was unaware that ghouls did more than build.
Tilpi: Wait
Tilpi appears confused
Rhotinia: Something very strange is happening here
Asgrim: It seems rather curious indeed. The building is also locked up tightly, so something might be inside.
Asgrim walks close and peeks in through the barricaded windows.
Rhotinia: I am coming around to the view that we must check inside
Rhotinia: But I would prefer not to burst through the door, let's find a quieter way inside
Volmalric: Volmalric rolls a Lore test:
Target: 12 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.15+1d20.5 = 20]

Rhotinia looks for a way to break in quietly
Rhotinia ties a rope to one of her arrows and fires it through a second story window into what appears to be a large armoir

You did succeed!
Tilpi lets out a quiet chortle.
Rhotinia misses twice, before finally hearing the *thunk* of an arrow finding purchase in something sturdy
Asgrim: You know, most people would not have needed 3 arrows for that. I think Tilpi might be the lightest of us, maybe she should try climbing first?
Tilpi: Sure.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Acrobatics test:
Target: 8 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.13+1d20.8 = 21]

Rhotinia waits for Tilpi to reach the window, then climbs up after her

Target: 10 Focus: 0 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [2d20.4 = 8]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Tilpi climbs up the rope and finds herself in a spacious looking second floor bedroom. It has what you would consider normal bedroom amenities, not counting the arrow embedded in the armoire with a rope leading outside. You spot light coming from the hallway through the gaps in the wooden door. The room appears unmolested.
Asgrim climbs up the rope behind Rhotinia. Then he hauls Democles up after the scholar falls on his ass twice trying to climb the rope, but the group does make it to the second floor bedroom.

Rhotinia looks and listens
Tilpi notices the stark disconnect between the streets and the creature comforts of this home.
Tilpi: This is a very confusing place.
Rhotinia opens the door and peeks outside, listening carefully. She spots a pair of spectral looking Messantians wearing very archaic looking clothing nearby. They are heavily armed. They seem to be ignoring Rhotinia for some reason, as one of them looks right through her and then they resume a conversation in some dialect Rhotinia does not understand. The candles and lamps here are lit on the interior side of the hallway. There is a sound of chanting coming from a room on the opposite side of the hall, down past where the ghostly Messantians are standing.
Asgrim peeks over Rhotinia's head.
Rhotinia: That is an understatement
Asgrim: Those guys are wearing the same type of clothes as the dead people we saw in the tomb where Sigurd was killed.
Democles: Really?
Democles peeks under Asgrim's arm.
Rhotinia: They don't seem to be a threat, at least not an immediate one
Democles: Wow, that is four centuries old Inquisitorial Heraldry. Those guys belong to the Dyiary faction if I remember my heraldry properly.
Rhotinia: Well, this is the Dyiary family estate
Rhotinia opens the door and walks out into the hall, following the sound of the chanting
Tilpi: Was this place barricated before all hell broke loose?
Democles: If you are asking me... I have no idea, but I doubt it.
The Messantia soldiers part for Rhotinia's approach. They gesture for her to move along, almost as if she is expected.
Rhotinia nods politely to them
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.11+1d20.15 = 26]
You did succeed!
Tilpi: I now understand much.
Rhotinia continues past the soldiers
Tilpi: follows Rhotinia's lead.
Rhotinia finds herself in front of a large double-door, the sound of many voices chanting can be heard on the other side. There is a smell of incense floating through the cracks and a calming feeling fills her body and mind.
Tilpi follows Rhotinia's lead.
Asgrim and Democles follow the characters.
Rhotinia: That isn't ominous at all....
Democles: Oh good, because everything else today has been.
Rhotinia opens the door and walks through
Asgrim: I think she might be sarcastic, but I cannot tell.
Tilpi: I love the delicate aroma!
Rhotinia: I like to keep you guessing, part of my feminine mystique
Tilpi: death has never smelled so good!
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Lore test:
Target: 15 Focus: 3 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 2 Momentum: 1 [1d20.5+1d20.8 = 13]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia opens the door and light floods the hallway. Inside there is a group of a people chanting along as an elderly gentleman reads from an ancient leatherbound book. There is a circle of warding on the floor. Inside the circle, floating in an opaque blue bubble is Rhiveth, looking significantly more physically intact than anyone here has seen her (since Volmalric is the only one who has seen her physical form in her tomb.) Before anyone can speak further, Argala moves over quickly and gestures for silence, then scribbles down on a piece of paper, "Hi! Don't speak we cannot disturb the chant!"
Asgrim pulls Democles outside as the super excited scholar seems incapable of NOT SPEAKING right now.
Rhotinia takes out a quil and some parchment
Rhotinia (Writing): Perhaps we can speak outside then?
Argala nods in agreement and gestures for you to head outside the room. If you do so, he closes the door behind you while the chanting continues unabated.
Tilpi: Is that the book?
Argala: Sorry if you caught us at a bad time, we are normally a little more welcoming, but today has been a bit... odd.. to say the least.
Argala: What book?
Rhotinia shows Argala the symbol
Democles: I'm excited beyond the capacity for rational speech! Is that actually Lemurian Princess Rhiveth in there?
Democles tries to peek through key hole while Asgrim keeps the scholar from doing anything rash and stupid.
Rhotinia: We came here seeking a tome bearing this mark, but we are suprised to see Rhiveth and... whatever is going on in there
Argala looks at the symbol.
Argala: Ah, yes. Well, the book my uncle is reading from has that symbol in a few places, it might be what you are looking for. Obviously, it is somewhat in use right now. If you want to make a transcription later I'm sure we can come to an agreement of some sort.
Rhotinia: What exactly are they using it for?
Argala: Trying to keep Rhiveth's spirit and partial physical form here so she can direct the Messantian defenses.
Argala says it with this, "gees, are you daft" tone of voice, as if "everyone should know that, get with the times woman!"
Rhotinia: Interesting, we had a similar intent
Argala: That would explain why the guards did not stop you from entering. Curious.
Tilpi appears dumbfounded and begins looking for food.
Rhotinia: Our friend Volmalric met you briefly, along with his former companions
Rhotinia: I believe you asked for his aid in locating another ancient tome
Argala: Ah, Volmalric. Yes, I was hoping to hire him and his colleagues to recover a book for me from a crypt nearby. He had raided a tomb and given that several of my usual contacts were dead, Volmalric was well recommended.
Rhotinia: I would much prefer that Messantia not be overrun with undead, it's bad for business
Argala: And I would much prefer Messantia not be overrun with undead as it is bad for my livelihood and health.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls an Insight test:
Target: 12 Focus: 1 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 1 Momentum: 0 [1d20.13+1d20.3 = 16]
You did succeed!
Tilpi opens a door. (Just follow your nose!)
Rhotinia: How is the defense of Messantia proceeding?
Rhotinia: I had planned to bring that tome to Rhiveth's tomb to do something like what you are attempting in there
Argala: Well, we seem to be somewhat winning, from what little I know. The ghouls and undead attacked from the sewers and overran the first floor early in the night, we barely managed to defend the second floor before the Guardians arose and drove out the ghouls. Our Dyiary spectral guards are somewhat stuck here, so we have implored Princess Rhiveth to lend her aid to other factions and groups. From the decreasing numbers of fires and sounds of combat, plus the presence of more humans on the street, I can infer things seem to be getting better as the night progresses.
Volmalric: Volmalric rolls an Alchemy test:

You did succeed!
Rhotinia: Well then, in that case I guess our heroic plan will not be needed. But it is fortuitous that we found our way here at any rate, Volmalric asked me to accept your offer on his behalf
Argala: Excellent, but I'm curious to hear what your heroic plan is, as I suspect it might still be needed. See, we are trapped here and there are limits to what we can do. We have also been maintaining this ritual for hours and... well... the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, if you understand my meaning.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Craft test:

GM: ...and then a random Hyrkanian shows up, offers great advice and cooking suggestions and becomes the "hit of the party" with much glee and enthusiasm.
Tilpi: Tilpi rolls a Survival test:
Target: 13 Focus: 2 Difficulty: 1 Complications: 0 Successes: 3 Momentum: 2 [1d20.2+1d20.9 = 11]
You succeeded and generated momentum!
Rhotinia: I theorized that by taking the scroll to Rhiveth's tomb, we could raise her more completely, and together push back the undead hordes
Tilpi returns
Argala: Ah, that would have been a better idea than what we are doing, as we are limited and at the extent of our ability, but the attack took us by surprise so we made good with what we had.
Tilpi: I think everyone here could use a warm cup of herbal tea and cookies. SO here you are!
Tilpi presents a tray of snacks and steaming beverages
Asgrim: Those smell delicious! Where in Hel's name did you find some random wholesomeness like this in the middle of a burning and besieged city?
Rhotinia: In that case, we can take the tome with us. With Asgrim's axe, my bow and whatever deadly conconctions Volmalric is surely huffing, we can try to get it to Rhiveth's tomb
Democles takes a cup of tea and some cookies.
Rhotinia accepts some tea and cookies
Tilpi: They called it the pantry. It's like a whole forest in one small spot.
Rhotinia: How did you bake cookies so fast?
Tilpi shrugs
Argala: That might work... however, when we end our chant here the ritual will fade and the monsters will be emboldened. It will make the city far more dangerous short term, but has the promise of a more permanent fix.
Argala takes a cookie off the plate and eats it, chewing thoughtfully.
Tilpi hands Argala a beverage
